Century of RAF 1918-1999
Narrated by Robert Powell
The Royal Air Force has defended Britain's skies and those of her
Empire and allies for most of this century, following the tradition
established by its predecessors, the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal
Naval Air Service.
Spawned from both the British Army and the Royal Navy, the RAF fought
hard to maintain its independence after the successes of the First World
War. It was not until the Second World War, however, that the RAF was able
to show its true worth. While Fighter Command defended Britain from the
Luftwaffe, Bomber Command took the fight across the Channel into the
war-torn skies over Germany. And while Coastal Command flew to all corners
of the world supplying and reinforcing hard pressed ground forces.
Century of RAF combines rare and unseen film with newly-shot footage
and expert opinion to tell the story of these momentous years for the
Royal Air Force. See how the early pilots fought in their wire, wood and
canvas aircraft; watch the aerial battles of Spitfire and Hurricane
against Me109; experience the massed bomber raids over Germany; and follow
the RAF through more than 50 years of the jet age from the first Meteors
to the low level Tornado attacks of the Gulf War.

Kamikaze, To Die for the Emperor
Named after the 'Divine Wind' which twice intervened to prevent
invasion by Kubla Khan's armies in the 13th Century, the Kamikaze pilots
symbolised the lengths the Japanese Imperial Forces were prepared to go to
when faced with defeat. Opposed by the might of the American Fleet rebuilt
after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the Imperial seal of approval
was given to suicide air attacks on the enemy stalking them in the
Pacific.
Honoured for its purity, suicide was shrouded in ceremony and
mysticism, capturing the Samurai spirit. It took several military forms
when Japan withdrew from the League of Nations after occupying Manchuria
in 1931. Ramming techniques were refined alongside the development of
human bombs, bullets, torpedoes, flying bombs as the suicide tactics
struck terror into the hearts of men fighting to live confronted by men
determined to die. But it was the suicide pilots, dubbed 'Black Edged
Cherry Blossoms' who were the central figures in this savage saga.
Rare archive action film captures the nightmare chaos of the Pacific
War as the air becomes thick with tracer bullets and belching smoke as the
sea foams with destruction. Defeat followed the gradual depletion of men
and machines, as the Banzai tactics led to mass suicide, but not before
the American Navy had been forced back by the Japanese onslaught, and the
world had caught a glimpse of the Samurai mentality as a whole nation from
the Emperor downwards were ready to die, and frequently did.

P-47 Thunderbolt
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the largest and heaviest
fighters to serve with the USAAF when it entered service in 1942, yet it
was soon to become regarded as one of the finest USAAF fighter aircraft to
be designed and developed by the US aviation industry during the Second
World War.
With it's potent armament of six or eight 0.50 inch (12.7mm) machine
guns, plus up to 2,000 lbs (907kgs) of bombs or 10.5 inch (127mm) rockets,
the gigantic fighter proved itself to be robust and reliable, being able
to absorb an enormous amount of punishment before being defeated by an
enemy.
Though primarily designed as an interceptor, the role of the P-47
Thunderbolt was to evolve as a far ranging, hard hitting, ground attack
aircraft - inflicting heavy damage upon enemy installations and transport
as it patrolled the skies at low level.
This fascinating and unique footage provides the opportunity to witness
this remarkable aircraft and the bravery and dedication of its pilots in
action during the Italian campaign 'Operation Strangle' of 1944 in support
of combined efforts of the US 5th Army and the British 8th Army.
