Bombers the Story of Strategic Bombing

Strategic bombing was first used by the Germans in the 1940 Blitz, and became the keystone of Allied strategy in World War II. As British Lancasters hit at the heart of Germany by night, the US Eighth Air Force Fortresses bombed the industrial centres by day, resulting in a round-the-clock bombardment that would not only tear the heart out of Hitler's war effort but would reduce the German morale to rubble.

Rare archive material and dramatic film footage tells the story of a controversial and costly strategy that was to be seen in operation in later years during the war between the United States and Vietnam.

B17 Fortress of the Sky in WWII

Though the Americans had various other bombers in World War II, without doubt Boeing's B-17 Flying Fortress is considered The Bomber of the War. Rugged, stable, easy to fly and capable of taking much battle damage it was universally loved by its crews and widely recognised by the public for its vital war roles. The three separate films on this video aim to convey some of the unique characteristics of the B-17 at War and its essential contribution towards victory.

Fortress of the Sky: This is rarely seen film specially made for Boeing Aircraft Company. It traces the early development of the B-17, its production processes, USAAF deployment and eventual combat action.

B-17 Midway: The Battle of Midway is generally considered the most significant engagement of the Pacific Theatre of war. US victory here turned the tide and stopped the Japanese advance, B-17 Flying Fortresses, along with B-26 Marauders, actually performed a defensive at Midway. They sought out, bombed and strafed the attacking Japanese carrier force. In doing so they played a mighty part in the victory at Midway.

Schwienfurt and Regensburg Raids: 17th August 1943 was the date of the USAAF's first long distance bomber raid against targets deep inside Germany. Unlike the RAF, USAAF bombers operated in daylight. The objectives were the Messerschmitt factory at Regensberg near the Austrian border and the ball bearing plants at Schweinfurt. Long distance ruled out close fighter escorts and bad weather played havoc with precise timing. Consequently the B-17's suffered fierce attacks from enemy fighters and very heavy flak, of 200 B-17s sent out 60 were shot down. This was a major disaster for USAAF. Many lessons were learnt, particularly the need for long range escort fighters. The terrible story of the raids is told via dramatic footage.

The Story of the Lancaster

As RAF Bomber Command took the war to the enemy under Air Marshal Arthur Harris, the four-engined Avro Lancaster reigned supreme, replacing the rugged, reliable Wellington in laying waste to German cities by night.

This most successful of all World War II 'heavies' could carry more than it's own weight in bomb load, including the 22,ooo pound Tallboy - the biggest conventional weapon ever made. And when fearless Guy Gibson led 617 squadron to fame on the low-level Dambuster raid - one of the war's most daring operations - the Lancaster was confirmed as an aviation legend.

With recent colour film of 'City of Lincoln', the RAF's last airworthy Lancaster, among wartime footage, this is the Lancaster's dramatic story.
