Battle of the Glorious 1st June 1794 by Louthemburg.
The first naval battle of the war
between Britain and France took place 400 miles west of the Ushant off the
Brittany coast. Louis Villaret de Joyeuse with the fleet from Brest of 26
war ships was escorting a convoy of grain ships across the Atlantic. A
British fleet under Admiral Lord Richard Howe, intercepted the French and
after 4 days of skirmishing, clashed in the major naval action on the 1st
June 1794. One French ship was sunk and six were captured, but the French
grain ships managed to escape back to the harbour in Brest. The British
fleet were too badly battered to pursue.
