Corporate Prelude by Philip West.
The Falklands conflict led to the Vulcan being used for the first time in anger in 25 years of RAF service; 44, 50 and 101 Sqdn. aircraft were involved in Operation Corporate with five crews selected, two from 50 Sqdn., one each from 44 Sqdn. and 101 Sqdn., plus others from the disbanded 9 Sqdn. This beautiful painting portrays the mighty XM607 at altitude during the work up period prior to active operations. During the Falklands War XM607, piloted by Martin Withers, flew there and back from Ascension Island non-stop, covering a staggering 7,500 miles; the flight lasted 15 hours 45 minutes – at the time, the longest combat flight in history. The Vulcan was refuelled by Victor tankers five times on the outward journey and once on the return journey.

Sergeant-Major Darren Leigh MC, 1st Battalion The Queens Lancashire Regiment by David Rowlands.
On 9th August 2003 there was widespread and violent disorder across Basrah due to fuel and electricity shortages. In the suburb of At Tannumah a large crowd gathered outside the Iraqi police station. While his company commander sought support from the Iraqi police, Company Sergeant-Major Leigh, with only some 30 soldiers and three vehicles, faced a crowd 300 strong. The rioters were throwing a hail of bricks, then surged forward in an attempt to overwhelm the police station. Sergeant-Major Leighs small force held them back, but came under small arms fire from gunmen behind the crowd. Despite the disparity in numbers, and sensing that his small party of Queens Lancashires were isolated on the far bank of the Shatt Al Arab, with reinforcement unlikely, Sergeant-Major Leigh seized the initiative by rapidly advancing into the crowd to disperse them. One of three grenades thrown by the Iraqis wounded him in the legs. Despite his injuries he led his 30 men in the subsequent baton charge against the mob, which so unnerved the rioters that they were forced to withdraw and eventually disperse as darkness fell. For his quick thinking, courage under fire, and determination despite his wounds, Sergeant-Major Leigh was awarded the Military Cross.

Thrown Tracks by David Rowlands.
Between 27th March and 4th April 2003, C Squadron The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards was attached to 40 Commando Royal Marines on the Al Faw peninsula, Iraq. Corporal Justin Simons was the squadrons recovery mechanic and Corporal James Garrett was the commander of the squadrons Challenger Armoured Repair and Recovery Vehicle - CRARRV. On 30th March, 2nd Troop C Squadron was supporting a Royal Marines clearance operation near Abu Al Khasib - Operation JAMES. A Challenger 2 tank became decisively engaged by the enemy, both its tracks were thrown and it was disabled beside the causeway. Corporal Garrett was tasked to recover it. As darkness fell and under attacks from rocket propelled grenades, small arms and mortar fire, Corporal Simons took charge of the recovery operation. He and Corporal John Morgan dismounted, while Corporal Garrett provided close protection by operating the machine-gun. The tank was successfully winched onto the road, but then became stranded in an even more difficult position. For six hours, in complete darkness, Corporals Simons and Morgan struggled to break both tracks conventionally before finally resorting to arc-welding equipment. Eventually Corporal Simons tried the unorthodox by organizing a CRARRV on CRARRV recovery, which succeeded in dragging the tank to safety, nine hours after it was disabled. Corporal Garrett and Corporal Simons were both Mentioned in Despatches for their leadership, calmness and disregard for their own safety.

Oberleutnant Otto Kissenberth by Ivan Berryman.
When pilots took off from the respective airfields in the 1914/18 war, they would rarely know what lay ahead. For Otto Kissenberth, the 12th October 1916 was to be a baptism of fire. Flying Fokker D.II 540/16, he scored his first three victories in quick succession, shooting down two Maurice Farmans and a Breguet V, as shown here. Unusual among fighter pilots of the time for the simple reason that he wore spectacles, Kissenberth went on to score an eventual 20 victories and survived the war, only to be killed whilst mountaineering in 1919.

Dawn Sortie by Gerald Coulson.
With its sleek, graceful design, instantly recognisable by its thin, aerodynamically advanced elliptical wings, the Supermarine Spitfire was the creation of R. J. Mitchell, an aeronautical creative genius. His fighter was to become not only the most important Allied aircraft of World War II, but the most famous British fighter in history. Mitchells design for the Spitfire was so fine that everyone who ever saw it, flew it, or fought in it was captivated for eternity. When American Eagle Squadron ace Jim Goodson transferred from Spitfires to fly his 4th Fighter Group P-47 Thunderbolt, he said it was like moving from a sports car to a truck. I fell in love with her the moment I was introduced. I was captivated by her sheer beauty; she was slimly built with a beautifully proportioned body and graceful curves just where they sohuld be; so said Lord Balfour, Britains under Secreatry of State for War in 1938, not of his wife but of the Spitfire. A sentiment echoed by generations of aviators and enthusiasts ever since. In the hands of an experienced pilot it was nearly invincible, and even legendary Luftwaffe leader Adolf Galland, when asked by Goering what he needed to overcome the RAF, replied: Give me a squadron of Spitfires!. Gerald Coulsons majestic painting captures a pair of Spitfire Mk1s at dawn high above the clouds over southern England in late 1940. An iconic tribute from the artist to the greatest fighter aircraft of all time.

Captain Ivan Smirnov by Ivan Berryman.
After service in the 96th Infantry Regiment, Smirnov joined the XIX Corps Air Squadron in 1914, shooting down twelve enemy aircraft in the course of two years. When revolution swept through Russia in November 1917, he escaped the Bolsheviks via a White counter-revolutionary route, eventually joining the RAF in England, serving at the Central Flying School at Upavon. He is shown here in his silver Nieuport 17, having just despatched a Roland C.II.

Sergeant John H Jones and pilot Captain W G Mostyn, Bristol F2b Fighter claiming a Luft-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft LVG by Ivan Berryman.
Of similar configuration, but usually outclassed by its British contemporary, the Bristol F2b, the Luft-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft LVG was essentially a strong and stable observation aircraft that served widely during World War 1. On 21st May 1917, this example became the victim of the guns of Sergeant John H Jones, contributing to his eventual tally of 15 victories. Here, his pilot that day, Captain W G Mostyn, has already had a squirt using his forward-firing Vickers gun before manoeuvring their 22 Sqn machine into position for Jones to finish the job with his twin Lewis guns.
