Polish Winged Lancers - Battle of Vienna, September 12th 1683 by Brian Palmer. (AP)

Polish Winged Lancers - Battle of Vienna, September 12th 1683 by Brian Palmer. (AP)

In an attempt to expand into Europe, Ottoman Turks under the command of Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa laid siege to Vienna for two months. A coalition of Polish, German and Austrians led by John III Sobieski, the King of Poland, arrived before Vienna to raise the siege. Sobieski led a charge of 20,000 cavalry, including the fearsome Winged Hussars into the Ottoman camp and completely routed their army. The battle was over in three hours, the Turks fled the field leaving behind tents, weapons, battle standards and provisions. The threat to Europe had been reversed, and this battle signaled the beginning of the end for the Ottoman Empire.

Brian Palmer

Ever since Brian Palmer was a young boy his two main passions have been art and history, in particular military history. Between 1965 and 1969 Brian studied graphic design and illustration at Hornsey College of Art in London and for many years worked as a Designer / Illustrator, primarily in the music and publishing industries. Some years ago he began to work solely as a freelance illustrator, eventually concentrating exclusively on military paintings as a means of combining his two great loves. The substantial majority of Brian's paintings of the past 12 or so years have been commisisoned by Cranston Fine Arts, and signed limited edition art prints have been produced, covering many famous and not so famous periods of warfare. For Brian, one of the most important elements of a painting is research. Costume or uniform details, arms, geography and even weather conditions if known, can all combine to bring a realistic and accurate look to a piece of work. Brian has been influenced by many artists and illustrators over the years but his personal favourites within the military genre are Messionier, J.P. Beadle and Caton Woodville, and he has long been a great admirer of Vermeer, Carravagio and the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Cranston Fine Arts are very happy with the art work Brian has produced for them and have commissioned many new items to be shown over the coming years.

Fokker DR.1 Triplane 425/17 of Manfred von Richthofen, accompanied by a Fokker. D.VII wingman, swoops from a high patrol early in 1918. 425/17 was the aircraft in which the Red Baron finally met his end in April of that year, no fewer than 17 of his victories having been scored in his red-painted triplane.

During a patrol on 6th July 1918, Christiansen spotted a British submarine on the surface of the Thames Estuary. He immediately turned and put his Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 floatplane into an attacking dive, raking the submarine C.25 with machine gun fire, killing the captain and five other crewmen. This victory was added to his personal tally, bringing his score to 13 kills by the end of the war, even though the submarine managed to limp back to safety. Christiansen survived the war and went on to work as a pilot for the Dornier company, notably flying the giant Dornier Do.X on its inaugural flight to New York in 1930. He died in 1972, aged 93.

In one of the finest portrayals of the Avro Lancaster, Moonlight Run depicts the aircraft of Fl. Lt. Mickey Martin (ED909 AJ-P) at the moment of release of the Wallace Bomb during the Dams raid on the Ruhr in 1943. With only the gentlest of moonlight rippling over the dark water of the Mohne, this dramatic picture plays homage to the impossible low altitudes and high speeds that were necessary to complete successfully their heroic mission. A stark and refreshing treatment of a subject at the hearts of all aviation historians.

Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. The view across Battleship Row, viewed from above Ford Island as the USS Nevada gallantly makes her break for the open sea, coming under heavy attack from Japanese A6M2s from the carrier Hiryu. The Nevada was eventually too badly damaged to continue and was beached to avoid blocking the harbour entrance. In the immediate foreground, the lightly damaged USS Tennessee is trapped inboard of USS West Virginia which has sunk at her moorings, leaking burning oil and hampering the daring operations to pluck trapped crew members from her decks, while just visible to the right is the stern of the USS Maryland and the capsized Oklahoma.

Under pressure from Stalin to open a second front in Europe, Operation Jubilee was designed ostensibly as a reconnaissance in force on the French coast, to show the feasibility of taking and holding a major defended port for a day, in this case Dieppe. The plan devised by Lord Louis Mountbatten failed due to inadequate naval and air support, carrying out the landing in daylight and general lack of intelligence of the target. Here new Churchill tanks of the 14th Canadian Tank Regiment (The Calgary Regiment), with men of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and Fusiliers Mont-Royals, struggle to fight their way off the beach. Only a handful of men penetrated into the town itself, and eventually the remaining troops were ordered to withdraw. Out of 5086 soldiers who landed only 1443 returned.
