Antoine-Jean Gros Gros, Antoine-Jean (1771-1835). French painter. He learnt his skill firstly from his father and then form Jacques Louis David. Antoine Jean Gros was inspired by other great painter such as Rubens and his love of strong colours. In 1793 Gros went to Italy where he meet napoleon and soon appointed Napoleons official battle painter. Although the paintings were painted to promote Napoleon and the great French conquests. (A form of artistic propaganda ) His Huge paintings such as the Battle of Eylau (Lourve 1808 ) must be admired for there dramatic and all inspiring style. After the fall of Napoleon, Gros took over the Studio of Jacques Louis David who went into exile. Antoine Jean Gros continued painting in the Neoclassical style and produced some superb Portraits. but did nothing to equal his Napoleonic paintings. Gros became very depressed with a sense of failure and in 1835 drowned himself in the River Seine More about Antoine-Jean Gros |
