The Intercontinental Formula was first organised by British Racing Drivers Club to allow the racing of cars with 2000cc to 3000cc engines. At the time the 1500cc limit of Formula 1 had been instituted by the international ruling body in the belief that the smaller cars would mean safer racing. In reality this meant that the relatively easy to handle Formula 1 cars could be driven by less experienced drivers almost as fast as the most experienced master drivers. The result was that the car with fractionally more power was the deciding factor in winning the race, rather than the better driver but this also compromised track safety. The introduction of the Intercontinental Formula was seen as more of a challenge for the drivers, with the larger and more powerful cars requiring greater skill and experience than to drive the 1500cc cars of Formula 1. The 13th International Trophy on Saturday 6th May 1961 was the first race of the season to carry World Championship points and consisted of 80 laps of Silverstone, a total of 233 miles. Stirling Moss, having already won the International Sports Car Race in a Lotus earlier that day, was driving Rob Walkers 2.5 litre Cooper Climax and qualified 2nd on the grid despite being unhappy with the steering of his car. The starting grid front row was Bruce McLaren, Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham and Graham Hill and by the time the race started at 2.30pm a heavy rain meant that the track was not only soaked but also covered in oil and rubber from the previous races. World Champion Jack Brabham made a superb start, passed Moss and was first into Copse and by lap 4 Moss was in 3rd place led by Surtees and Brabham. Due to appalling conditions and poor visibility many of the cars were spinning or leaving the track and by lap 13 Brabham and Moss were 1st and 2nd with the rest of the field some distance behind. Moss now poured on the pressure and for the next few laps he tried to pass as he harried Brabham in a duel for the lead. The pair were now beginning to lap the tailenders and, at around a quarter of the distance Moss was held up by Flockhart, Brabhams team member, who had allowed Brabham to pass. Moss gestured angrily to Flockhart as he was unable to follow Brabham and, as the rain paused for a while the pace became faster. Suddenly and quite dramatically Moss passed both Flockhart and Brabham and within 2 laps had gained 5 seconds on the World Champion. As the rain returned in a deluge Moss mercilessly pushed on, increasing his lead to 1.5 minutes by the halfway mark. Although he could have taken things easily at this point Moss drove on relentlessly at a seemingly impossible pace and was now lapping most of the field for a second time. By the ¾ stage he completed his humiliation of Brabham by passing him for a second time to lap him representing a 3 mile lead. Moss eventually won the race in 2hrs 41 mins 19.2 secs, 1.5 laps ahead of Brabham and at least two laps ahead of the rest of the field in what were treacherous conditions. At the end of the race Moss summed up the experience as a nice ride, having proved himself to be one of the greatest and fastest drivers in the world under any conditions. Sir Stirling Moss believes this to be one of his finest ever drives. A Moment of Triumph by Gerald Coulson.Click For DetailsDHM1842

England all-rounder Andrew Freddie Flintoff was integral to their Ashes win of 2005. Scoring crucial runs off the bat, including a century at Trent Bridge, he also broke the 1981 record of Ian Botham of hitting six sixes in an Ashes test match, by scoring 9 in one test. He also took many key wickets throughout the Ashes series, and was clearly the man of the 2005 Ashes series. Freddie by Darren Baker.Click For DetailsDHM1860

With Tibet in the North and Nepal on her southern flanks, what was first called peak b, then peak XY, finally became Mount Everest in 1865 after the surveyor general of India, Sir George Everest. To the Tibetans who live in its shadow it is called Chomolongma, Mother Goddess of the Earth. First successfully climbed by the 1953 British expedition, enabling Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay to reach the summit n 29th May. The height first calculated in 1856 at 29,002 ft is now accurately made as 29,035 ft, rising a few centimetres each year due to the Tectonic plates of India and the Asian land-mass. Bruce McLaren is the man behind the McLaren name. Inspired by Babham, McLaren constructed his own cars and formed Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd. His first Formula 1 chassis, the M2B, was designed by Robin Herd and built in 1966. Sadly on 2nd June 1970 Bruce was killed testing the McLaren M8. In 1974 Emerson Fittipaldi won the World Championship after 3 wins and a number of consistent finishes. After one of the most dramatic seasons, James Hunt took the 1976 Championship by a single point. In the 80s, team boss Ron Dennis and designer John Baranrd created one of Formula Ones classics, the carbon fibre MP4. In 1984, Niki Lauda and Alain Prost dominated and the Austrian took the championship by half a point. Prost then won consecutive Championships in 1985 and 1986. For 1988 McLaren had the ultimate supertam: Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Hond engines. Senna won the first of three Championships in four years with McLaren. Prost took the 1989 World Championship and the joined Ferrari. The withdrawal of Honda in 1992 left McLaren underpowered, but the brilliant Senna still managed five wins in 1993, ensuring that McLaren surpassed Ferraris position as the most successful team in racing history.Tribute to McLaren by Stuart McIntyreClick For DetailsFAR0798

Crackerjack, a Swan 46 racing yacht is seen racing around the East Lepe buoy in the Solent during the challenging Rolex Swan European Regatta in 1997. Due to the light winds, courses were kept short during the regatta, which allowed for plenty of close action for the large Class 1 yachts such as Highland Fling, Sotto Voce and Dark Swan. However, Crackerjack kept the pressure on the larger yachts and in recent years has won many prizes. She made a stunning sight, beating up the boisterous Solent during this breezy battle. Depicts two classic yachts, Shamrock and Columbia, in the last of their famous Americas Cup races in 1899. The race was held along the Jersey shore on October 29th and the run down mark was described by one American author as the finest fifteen mile run in international yachting history. The two craft raced neck and neck until the last beat, when Columbia finally edged ahead. Once in the lead, Columbia turned the stake boat faster than her rival and was eventually victorious by over six minutes. The Last Beat by Steven DewsClick For DetailsLIM0461
After a distinguished racing career in the 1930s, Velsheda languished for many years on a mud berth on the Hamble. Eventually sold, her new owner set about rebuilding her with the latest rig, sail technology and deck hardware. The result was the creation of a yacht which is both fast but which retains her classic racing pedigree. Velsheda was relaunched on 3rd September 1997 and she spent several weeks on the sail trials on the Solent. Velsheda - Sail Trials on the Solent by Steven DewsClick For DetailsLIM0462
Celebration of the Fife Regatta, which was held on the Clyde in June 1998. The regatta was organised to bring some of the greatest yachts built by the famous Clyde yard of W Fife & Son back to their birthplace. The yard thrived from 1790 to 1965 and Moonbeam III was the fastest of the surviving Fife yachts to return for the celebrations. Designed by William Fife III and built in 1903, Moonbeam III was victorious in two of her races and is depicted here during the final event of the great regatta, The Kyles of Bute Race.Moonbeam at Fife Regatta by Steven DewsClick For DetailsLIM0475
