In 1974 the greatest rugby union side ever to leave the British Isles took on the mighty Springboks in a gruelling 22 match series, including four test matches. By the end, each member of that historic team had entered British Rugby folklore. Several of the victorious side from the 1971 tour of New Zealand united once again and accomplished a remarkable unbeaten record of 21 consecutive victories and a draw in the final test, however, many commentators feel that a perfect record was denied due to poor refereeing. Individual performances, which caught the headlines, included the magnificent half-back pairing of Phil Bennett and Gareth Edwards. JJ Williams completed two brilliant tries during the third test and finished with an impressive 112 tour tries in total. Roger Uttleys appearance in no less than 16 of the 22 games was a formidable achievement and JPR Williams, possibly the greatest ever full back, would have won the final test with a magnificent run to set up Fergus Slatterys try only for it to be dubiously disallowed. Scotlands Ian McGeechan demonstrated superb agility and pace in the centre whilst fellow country man, Andy Irvine, produced countless moments of sublime skill in the final two tests and will always be remembered as one of the most gifted players ever to don a Lions shirt. The Lions tremendous forward line led by inspirational Captain Willie John McBride was in many respects the driving force behind the success of the 1974 tour. McBrides courage and leadership singled him out above all others, as this was to be his fifth and final Lions tour. McBrides Lions career spanned a remarkable 12 years and 17 tests, a record, which may never be surpassed. The other forwards including Cotton, McLauchlan, Gordon Brown, Windsor, Slattery and Mervyn Davies combined effectively to set up a strong platform for victory and proved to be stalwarts in both attack and defence. Everyone returned from the 1974 tour a hero and it would be fair to say that this unparalleled squad is still a benchmark to which each and every successive Lions team since 1974 have strived to emulate.Pride of the Lions 74 by Keith Fearon.Click For DetailsSG0003
The British Lions toured Australia in the Summer of 1989 in the knowledge that no Lions touring side had won a Test Series since Willie John McBrides team of 1974 had triumphed in South Africa 15 years previously. Against such stars as Campese, Farr Jones, Lynagh and Ella the Lions led by Scotlands Finlay Caulder knew the odds were stacked against them. In a three test series, anyone who didnt know the enormity of the Lions task soon found out as a rampant Wallabies side thrashed the Lions 30-12. Team manager Clive Rowlands with coaches Roger Uttley and Ian McGeechan, both veterans of the 74 Lions team, made sweeping changes for the Second Test in Brisbane bringing in the likes of Teague and Dooley to strengthen the side. Jeremy Guscotts game breaking try chasing his own kick stunned the Australians and levelled the series at one game all. The Third and deciding Test saw the teams return to the scene of the Wallabies triumph in the first match in Sydney. The teams traded penalties and were level at 9-9 at half time. A Lynagh penalty edged the Australians in front, then with the Lions pressing David Campese threw a wild pass behind his own line and Welshman Ieuan Evans pounced to give the Lions the lead. Hastings penalties stretched the lead 19-12 when two more Lynagh penalties brought the Wallabies to within a point. The Lions were hanging on in a desperate rearguard action as Australia searched in vain for the one score that would win the series. Calder's Lions hung on and the Lions were victorious for the first time since 1974.Pride of Lions 89 by Simon Smith.Click For DetailsSG0004

Following an injury to first choice scrum half Rob Howley, Northampton and Englands Matt Dawson started for the crucial first test on the 21st June in Cape Town. With the game finely poised entering its final phase Matt scored an amazing try faking an overhead pass which fooled the whole Springbok defence leaving him to run in unopposed. Leicester Tigers 34 v Stade Francais 30, May 19th 2001. Having just completed a hat trick of domestic titles winning the English premiership for the third year in a row, Leicester Tigers faced the daunting task of playing Stade Francais in Paris in an attempt to win the biggest prize in club rugby, the European Cup. This was the one major honour that had eluded Englands top club side and Martin Johnsons men would have to be at their very best to become European Champions. 15,000 Tigers fans travelled to Paris and inspired their team to a memorable vicotry. Despite outscoring the French champions by two tries to nil, from Leon Lloyd and Neil Back, Leicester trailed entering the final two minutes. The Italian stand off Diego Dominguez had kicked 30 points for Stade and it looked like being just enough for victory. With the clock running down, a brilliant break from man of the match Ausitn Healy ended up with Leon Lloyd going over for a try in the corner. Tim Stimpson rounded off a great afternoon with a touchline conversion that sealed an historic victory.Champions of Europe by Robert Highton.Click For DetailsSG0034
