On July 9th 1944 Fleet Air Arm Avenger II. of 854 squadron
intercepted a German V-1 Flying bomb over the English channel,
telegraphist/Air Gunner Fred Shirmer destroyed it at a range of 700 yards
firing only 20 rounds. for his achievements he received mention in
dispatches.
