Spitfires - High Patrol by Philip West.

A gathering section of 124 Squadron Spitfires led by Peter Ayerst climbs for height above the bomber stream and a lone Mosquito. This squadron plus many others was tasked with protecting the bombers over occupied Europe. For these long range missions the Spitfires carry 90 Gallon Slipper Tanks to extend the relatively short endurance of the aircraft. In combat with enemy fighters they would jettison the tanks. However, following a shortage, they were encouraged to bring them back if they possibly could.

Capitaine Georges Guynemer by Ivan Berryman.

One of Frances most venerated pilots in World War 1 was Capitaine Georges Guynemer whose final victory tally has never been fully established, although he has been officially credited with 53 kills. It is more likely, however, that his actual total was nearer to 88! He is shown here in his Spad S.VII having just claimed his 31st victim, a Gotha bomber.

Oberleutnant Lothar Freiherr von Richthofen by Ivan Berryman.

On the evening of 7th May 1917, a fierce battle took place involving aircraft of Jasta 11 and 56 Sqn RFC, the former led by the brother of the Red Baron, Lothar von Richthofen. As the sun dipped beneath the heavy clouds, most expected the dogfight to break off in the fading light, but an extraordinary duel between the RFCs Captain Albert Ball and Lothar von Richthofen broke out, the two aircraft flying directly at each other, firing continuously, then turning and repeating the manoeuvre. Lothars all red Albatross was damaged, but landed safely. Albert Balls SE5, however, was seen by observers to fall through the heavy cloudbase inverted, before crashing heavily, fatally wounding Ball.

Threatening Skies by Richard Taylor.

Richard Taylors painting recreates an encounter on 19th February 1945. As dawn breaks over the Pacific, a determined force of Japanese Ki-44s launch a surprise attack on a large formation of USAAF B-29 Superfortresses as they approach the Japanese mainland. B-29 gunners let rip as one fighter flashes past, with a second fighter closing at high speed. Chunks of the B-29s port wing and aileron have been taken out in the initial attack, and with another Japanese fighter fast on its tail, the outcome of this particular encounter hangs in the balance. A total of ten Superfortresses fell victim that day.

An Air Combat First by Keith Woodcock

Air America Bell 205 vs Attacking North Vietnamese Air Force An-2 Colt Captain Theodore H. Moore and Flight Mechanic Glenn R. Woods 12 January 1968 at Lima Site 85, Phou Pha Thi, Laos. Air America Won. During the Vietnam War the Americans operated a secret radar station; Site 85, situated 15 miles from the North Vietnamese border atop one of the highest mountains in Laos. Crucially it gave American bombers the ability to attack in all weather, a critical capability during the Rolling Thunder bombing campaign. The North Vietnamese got wise! Captain Theodore H. Moore and Flight Mechanic Glenn R. Woods had been recruited to fly for Air America, a CIA owned and operated proprietary that was used to support intelligence agents and military personnel in Asia. On 12 Jan 1968, Moore and Woods, who were on a mission delivering artillery ammunition in the area, watched in amazement as a formation of North Vietnamese Air Force AN-2 Colt biplanes attacked the base. The two Russian built biplanes dropped mortars, fired rockets and strafed the radar station with machine gun fire. Moore radioed a warning to the agents on the ground; however the attack killed several Hmong guerrillas defending the base. Moores helicopter, a civilian version of the UH-1 Huey was supposed to be unarmed, but Woods had packed an AK-47, officially contraband, but in their defence Moore explained; if you go down and dont have a weapon, youre Toast. They decided to; make chase Moore said. The Colts, first flown in 1947, were faster than the helicopter, which was able to gain on them when they flew low and then tried to climb the mountainous terrain. Woods fired from the door of the Huey. One of the planes crashed immediately, while the second plane, also hit, flew on for several miles before crashing into a ridge. The shooting down of fixed wing aircraft from a helicopter was a Singular aerial victory in the entire history of the Vietnam war, according to the author of One Day Too Long: Top Secret Site 85 and the Bombing of North Vietnam. Moore was initially hauled before his superiors under threat of Court Marshal, I was a little out of line in what I did' he recalled. However after initial consternations his actions were finally commended. Two months later Site 85 was destroyed by North Vietnamese Commandos, 12 U.S. Air Force personnel were killed, the largest single loss of USAF personnel during the war.

Leutnant Josef Jacobs by Ivan Berryman.

Germays greatest exponent of the Fokker Dr1 Triplane, Leutnant Josef Jacobs is depicted chatting with colleagues of Jasta 7 before a sortie in the spring of 1918. His black Triplane became well known to allied pilots, not least because of his formidable kill rate. By the end of the war, still aged just 24, Jacobs had claimed 48 enemy aircraft destroyed. The unusual practice of applying the black cross to the upper sides of the lower wings was to counter friendly fire from other German aircraft who frequently mistook the Dr1 for a Sopwith Triplane.

Dambusters - Breaching the Eder Dam by Robert Taylor.

Mist and fog swirled eerily over the Eder Lake on the night of 16/17 May 1943 as four specially modified Lancasters of 617 Squadron, under the leadership of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, circled overhead. Their target, the mighty Eder Dam, was barely visible in the valley below. Immediately following the successful breach of the Mohne Dam, Gibson had led his remaining aircraft 50 miles to the south-east to hit their second target, the Eder Dam. Surrounded by high ground with thousand feet ridges, the Eder was altogether a more testing target. The Lancaster pilots would need to dive steeply into the gorge that formed the Eder lake before undertaking a steep turn towards the Dam itself. As if this were not demanding enough in the darkness of night, they then had to fly towards the target at precisely 60ft above the lake at the exact speed of 230mph, before releasing their Barnes Wallace designed hydrostatic bouncing bombs. Pilots Shannon and Maudsley tried time and again to position their laden bombers correctly before managing to release their weapons – but the dam still held. Now success depended solely on Knight carrying the last bomb! With time and fuel now a concern, Knights first effort to position, like Shannon and Maudsley before him, failed, but his second run favoured the brave. Knight released his bomb with absolute precision, striking the wall at precisely the crucial point. With a tremendous explosion the Eder Dam collapsed before their eyes. Robert Taylors sensational new painting vividly shows the dramatic moment of impact. In the cockpit Knight and flight engineer Ray Grayston fight the controls to clear the dam, combining their physical strength to haul the lumbering Lancaster up and over the dam and to clear the high ground that lies ahead. Below and behind them, the second of Germanys mighty western dams lies finally breached.

ARTIST
Featured Artist - David Dipnall

David Dipnals evocative images of the restful idyllic scenes of southern England are well known, epitomising, as they have for years, all that is endearing about traditional English landscapes. His well known images of his beautiful and fertile homeland are a world away from Australia, where he now spends most of his time. In the last decade, David Dipnall estimates that he has travelled nearly 2 million miles, continuing to maintain a busy work schedule of exhibitions and regularly commuting between England and Australia. His originals are highly sought after, and over fifty of his images have been published as limited edition prints, many of which have sold out. Always a traveller, he believes in the philosophy that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and his beautifully detailed traditional English landscapes are definitely painted from the heart.
