Marlborough
at the Battle of Blenheim. The battle of Blenheim was fought during the
war of the Spanish Succession in 1704. The Duke of Marlborough, on August
13th, opened his attack on the French but along with his Austrian allies
were heavily engaged and were halted along the front. The Duke of
Marlborough then concentrated his 8,000 man cavalry force on an attack of
the French centre. The cavalry stormed across the Nebel and attacked the
French cavalry who were routed. The cavalry wheeled left and routed the
French into the Danube, where many were drowned. This manoeuvre split the
French infantry in two, with Prince Eugene attacking the right and
scattering the French infantry, the victory was complete. The battle of
Blenheim saved Vienna and took Bavaria out of the war, the French army
were forced back to the Rhine.
