Peter Deighan

Peter Deighan was born in the county town of Monaghan, Ireland in 1941. It was while helping out on his uncle#39;s farm as a young lad he developed an affinity with horses which has remained with him through his adult life. As a 16-year-old Peter Deighan left Ireland to work in England and got a job as a trainee welder at Vauxhall Motors car plant in Luton, Bedfordshire. This work did little to satisfy his emerging creative talent. However, during this time Peter won an amateur art competition and was offered a scholarship at the Slade College of Art in London. Peter's raw artistic talent was quickly recognised and he began to receive commissions, including one from the Duke of Bedford. Peter held his first one-man exhibition in the Duke's stately home, Woburn Abbey. Among his earlier commissions were portraits of the comedian Eric Morecambe, footballer Jimmy Greaves, speaker of the house of Commons Selwyn Lloyd and Cardinal Basil Hume Archbishop of Westminister. Following the unqualified success of his one-man show, Peter became a full time artist, devoting all his energies and creativity to his main passion in life, painting. He was also able to combine his love of painting with his passion for horses. Peter quickly established a reputation as one of the world's leading equestrian artists. He received commissions from prominent members of the racing fraternity, including Dr and Mrs Vincent O'Brien, Mr and Mrs JP McManus, Mr and Mrs Robert Sangster, Captain and Mrs John MacDonald-Buchanan, and Sheikh Mohammed Al-Maktoum. So impressed were his patrons that they also commissioned Peter to paint their close family members. Among those who now hang a Deighan family portrait in their homes are the McManus, the Magnier and the Sangster families. Peter Deighan also painted the official portrait of the British Prime Minster John Major, thriller writer Frederick Forsyth (after meeting him on the Gay Byrne Late Late Show in Dublin), footballer Jimmy Greaves, snooker champion Steve Davis and boxer Barry McGuigan. He has had his paintings displayed in the annual exhibitions of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Society of Equestrian Artists in London. Being such a talented and versatile painter, Peter turned his attention to some of his other interests in life. Following visits to southern Africa he painted a series of wildlife studies. His paintings of the indigenous population were particularly evocative. As Peter's reputation as one of the world's leading portrait painters grew, he began to receive commissions from North America. His most notable patrons included Payne Stewart. Peter visited Payne Stewart's home in Florida to paint a family group portrait. It was during his visit to Florida that Peter met and was commissioned to paint Tiger Woods and Mark O'Meara. Shortly after the tragic death of Payne Stewart, one of Peter's portraits of the golfer fetched £1.4 million at a JP McManus Charity auction. In 2005 Peter's painting of the Irish Ryder Cup players, a painting of Tiger Woods and Mark O'Meara were sold for similar sums at auction. Peter was commissioned to paint the 2006 European Ryder Cup players by Dr Michael Smurfit, for the K Club. Cranston Fine Arts are proud to offer Peter Deighan art prints direct to the public as part of its massive sporting range.

Derby Winners by Peter Deighan.

Whilst flat-racing enthusiasts may argue which horse was the best Derby Winner, artist Peter Deighan was deciding for himself, he made a short list of six. His canvas entitled Derby Winners depicts these six. They include the great Shergar, who ran the fastest Derby in history and won by a record ten lengths. Also included are Golden Fleece, Reference Point, Teenoso, The Minstrel and the fantastic Nashwan. Any of these could be classified as the greatest.

Edderys Best by Peter Deighan

To celebrate the jockeys eleventh title, Peter Deighan has captured Pat Eddery on canvas along with some of the most brilliant racehorses seen in this country for many years. Pat who has equalled the number of championships won by his great rivel and friend, the legendary Lester Piggott is seen at his brilliant best aboard Dancing Brave, Trempolino, Rainbow Quest, Warning, Pebbles, El Gran Senor, Golden Fleece, Zafonic and Peters magnificent head studies of both Warning and Trempolino complement beautifully the flowing movement of the horses in full stride.

England - Euro 96 by Peter Deighan.

A poignant study of the ecstatic highs and dramatic lows of the England squad that did the nation proud in the thrilling European Championships of 1996. Peter Deighan brilliantly captures then sheer delight as the goals were hammered in against the Scots and the Dutch before the excitement and high drama of the semi-final, when total ecstacy was followed ultimately by heartbreak. Team members shown here include, Alan Shearer, Paul Ince, Paul Gascoigne, Teddy Sherringham, Stuart Pearce and Gareth Southgate to name but a few, of course, the team would not be complete without the manager of the time Terry Venables . Completing the picture is Glenn Hoddle the incoming manager.

Pride of England by Peter Deighan.

Team members shown here include Captain, Alan Shearer together with the future England captain David Beckham, Michael Owen, Tony Adams, Paul Ince, Paul Scholes, Darren Anderton, Sol Campbell, Graham Le Saux, David Seaman and last but not least the manager, Glen Hoddle.

Maestro by Peter Deighan

Lester and Rodrigo de Triano. Lester Piggotts riding is legendary but, in 1992 he re-wrote the record books when riding his thirtieth and final Classic winner at the age of 57 aboard Peter Chapple-Hyams brilliant 3yo Rodrigo de Triano. Rodrigo had already stamped himself as a 2yo of the highest calibre but, had been beaten first time out as a 3yo in the Greenham trial at Newbury...and then Lester took over! Riding the son of El Gran Senor for the first time in public in the Two Thousand Guineas, Lester immediately struck up a formidable relationship with this super tough individual. Settled out the back by Lester, Rodrigo cruised up to the leaders with just over a furlong to run and, when asked to quicken by the Maestro, he surged clear for a most emphatic victory, making history in the process. Subsequently successful in three more Group One events, The Irish Two Thousand Guineas, The Juddmonte International and the Dubai Champion Stakes, all under the Maestro, Rodrigo was retired to stud a champion.

The Golden Boy by Peter Deighan.

Kentucky - born Steve Cauthen was just 12 years old when his father Tex finally agreed to help the single-minded young man realise a burning ambition to become a jockey provided he didn't let success make him big-headed. No parental proviso was ever more faithfully fulfilled. In the year of his seventeenth birthday the kid rode 487 winners of 6 million dollars, including the U.S. Triple Crown on Affirmed. He went on to captivate British hearts two years later. By 1984 he was champion. But better was to come. No wonder the fairytale ingredients of 1985 have fired the imagination and talent of Peter Deighan to such compelling effect.

Lester Piggott's Oaks Winners.

Carrozza (1957), Petite Etoile (1959), Valoris (1966), Juliette Marny (1975), Blue Wind (1981), Circus Plume (1984).

Seve Ballesteros by Peter Deighan.

A great tribute to one of the all time greats in golf who will be sadly missed.

Kings of the Baize II by Peter Deighan

Peter Deighan has superbly captured Jimmy White, John Parrot, Stephen Hendry, James Wattana, John Higgins, Ken Doherty, Ronnie OSullivan and of course the centrepiece, a magnificent study of former World Champion Steve Davis as he Ponders his next shot. A must for all snooker rooms, clubs and players of this wonderful game.

England - the Rugby World Cup Squad by Peter Deighan.

Commemorating the World Cup in South Africa in 1995, Peter Deighans brilliant collage depicts the stars of the England squad in action including Brian Moore, Bob Andrew, Tony and Rory Underwood, Jeremy Guscott and of course the captain Will Carling.

Mansell by Peter Deighan.

A celebration of Nigel Mansells success in winning the Formula 1 World Championship and the Indy Car Championship in successive years. A celebration of the magnificent talents of Nigel Mansell. He made his debut in Formula 1 in 1981 and his superb driving technique made an instant impact. He recorded victory after victory coming agonisingly close to being world champion many times before gaining his well deserved Formula 1 title in 1992. The following year he recorded an unprecedented double, gaining the Indy Car championship in 1993. A feat that reserves his name quite rightly in the record books.
