David Rowlands
David Rowlands has had a passion for sketching British soldiers and their equipment ever since he was a boy. After completing his studies at Manchester University in 1977, he joined the staff of the Reading Room at the National Army Museum, working full-time as a professional artist. Keenly interested in the history of British campaigns, uniforms and tactics, he has painted many historical battle scenes with great attention to accuracy and detail. This has resulted in widespread recognition of his work with the result that he has been commissioned to record the activities of many Regiments in the present day. These commissions have taken him frequently to Northern Ireland, as well as Germany, Cyprus, Hong Kong and Gibraltar. In 1991 David Rowlands was the only artist invited by the Army to visit the Gulf. Attached to a Warrior crew of 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, he observed the work of the various Arms at first hand, enabling him to complete many accurate paintings for Regiments and Corps engaged in the conflict. Early in 1993 he was the first war artist to visit Bosnia and record the British troops in Operation GRAPPLE 1. Invited by Headquarters National Support Element, he travelled extensively on convoys and sketched the operations from Split to Vitez and Travnik. Several paintings have been commissioned by the participating units, including one of 7 Armoured Workshop REME at Gornji Vakul. Over the past ten years David has been sent regularly to Iraq and Afghanistan for projects involving many of the British and Nato forces. He has probably spent as much time overseas gathering information for these projects as he has spent in the UK. He is certainly one of the major military artists of the past 20 years. Many of these fine paintings are now available as signed edtion art prints and canvases. |

The 33rd (Duke of Wellingtons) Regiment storming the Great Redoubt at the Battle of Alma, 20th September 1854 by David Rowlands. 20 September 1854: The first battle of the Crimean War took place when the British and French attacked the Russians who held a formidable position on the steep slope above the River Alma. The 33rd was the centre regiment of the 1st Brigade, which was ordered to advance across the river and into the direction of the 'Great Redoubt', an entrenched position which the Russians had dug to form a protective earth bank. This position held as many as 16 battalions and 14 heavy guns. Marching steadily uphill, under artillery and musket fire, the 7th, 23rd and 33rd Regiments, despite losing their line formation, reached their objective and leapt into the Great Redoubt cheering as they did so. The Russian infantry were formed in a deep mass, and the two sides blazed away at each other at short range. The British carried the position most gallantly, and after a fierce struggle drove the Russians out. Three officers in succession had been shot while carrying the Colours of the 33rd. Captain Wallis described how, as the Russian gunners furiously struggled to withdraw their guns, a private of the 33rd spotted one being limbered up. Two horses were already attached, but he managed to seize the gun and bring it away. Sir George Brown, commanding the Light Division , had seen his action and ordered Colonel Blake to promote him to sergeant for his gallant conduct. The Light Division had been so mauled and disordered that a Russian counter-attack drove it back from the Great Redoubt, but the Guards and the Highland Brigade coming up at last drove the enemy from the battlefield. The 33rd suffered more casualties than any other British regiment engaged. Colonel Blake's horse was wounded in three places. |

Battle of Minden 1st August 1759. Major battle of the Seven years war. After the French victory in April at Bergen, The French Army 60,000 strong under the command of Duc Louis de Contades marched northwards towards Hanover. To block this French Advance the Prussian Army under Field Marshall The Duke of Brunswick decided to hold the line at Minden. The Duke of Brunswick could only raise a force of 45,000 men including a British Contingent under Lord George Sackville of 6 regiments, a detachment of cavalry and some artillery. The French opened the battle attacking, the British Infantry regiments probably due to a misunderstanding, advanced and they were followed by the Hanoverian Infantry. They attacked the French cavalry. The Infantry advanced only stopping to let off a volleys of fire. This unconventional use of Infantry against cavalry, the French force confused and suffering losses broke. The victory was in Ferdinands grasp, he ordered his cavalry forward but the British general Sackville refused to send his cavalry after the French. For this action he was later court-martialled by King George II and cashiered from the army. The French were able to withdraw in order, but their losses had been 7,000 men and 43 artillery guns. The British and Hanoverian losses were less than 3,000 with 1500 of these casualties inflicted on the British Infantry. This battle ended all French hopes of capturing Hanover. The Battle of Culloden, 16th April 1746 by David Rowlands. The Kings Regiment positioned behind the Leanach dyke, opens a deadly flanking fire on the Highlanders of the Atholl Brigade, on the right wing of the Jacobite Army, under the command of Colonel William Barrell, played a significant role on the British Royal Army's left flank. They were positioned on rising ground, protected by a dyke, and their fire inflicted heavy casualties on the charging Highlanders of the Atholl Brigade. The regiment suffered considerable losses, with Lieutenant Colonel Robert Rich losing a hand and nearly losing his other arm. |

The Raid on St Nazaire 28th March 1942 by David Rowlands. In early 1942 Britains very survival was threatened by the success of German U-Boat raids on shipping in the Atlantic. their mighty battleship Tirpitz posed even a greater threat. Operation Chariot a sea -borne commando attack was launched on a huge Normandie dock in the heavily defended St Naziare harbour. Destruction of the dock would deprive the Germans of the only repair site on the Atlantic coast big enough for the 50,000 ton Tirpitz. Accompanied by 18 small craft of Coastal Forces. HMS Campbletown boldly steamed up three Loire estuary under intense German fire, and struck the caisson of the dry dock at 0134 hrs. The Commandos rapidly disembarked from the bows and set about destroying the dock installations, Of the 622 who set out from Falmouth 169 died, 200 became prisoners and only 242 returned home. Five Victoria Crosses, four DSOs, seventeen DSCs and eleven MCs were awarded in the daring and brilliantly successful raid. |

40 Commando Royal Marines by David Rowlands. Capturing the Manifold Metering Station (MMS) on the Al Faw peninsula, Iraq. During Operation TELIC, the liberation of Iraq, on the night of 20th March 2003, 40 Commando Royal Marines, under the command of Lt Col G K Messenger OBE, mounted an amphibious helicopter assault to seize key Iraqi oil infrastructure on the Al Faw peninsula. It took around five hours from H hour until the area was deemed secure, and this painting shows the scene at first light on 21st March. As the first conventional troops on the ground, the strategic significance of the operation was immense. The Commando Group's role in the success of the coalition operation in Iraq was pivotal and profound. In a two-week period of intense operations, it secured vital oil installations, cleared a large expanse of enemy held terrain, and defeated a major enemy stronghold on the outskirts of Basra, killing over 150 Iraqi soldiers and taking 440 prisoners. |

Chinooks Approaching the Al Faw Peninsula, Iraq by David Rowlands. Chinook helicopters based at RAF Odiham approach the landing site on the Al Faw peninsula, Iraq on the night of 20th March 2003 to insert Royal Marines to secure the oil terminal. Operation HOUGHTON, as it was known, was part of the early stages of Operation TELIC, the campaign to rid the country of Saddam Hussein. The strength of the enemy ground forces was unknown. The formation of 5 aircraft inserted 200 Royal Marines in 3 waves in 2 minutes and was led by Squadron Leader Steve Carr flying Bravo November, the same aircraft that was so successful during the Falklands War in 1982. For leading the assault Squadron Leader Carr was awarded with the Distinguished Flying Cross. |

4 Regiment in the attack, Operation DESERT STORM, Iraq, 26th February 1991. by David Rowlands. The painting shows the three Lynx and three Gazelles from 4 Regiment ordered to assist the Queens Royal Irish Hussars attack objective PLATINUM. Observing the left flank are two Gazelles, XX 395 commanded by Sgt Thompson and flown by Cpl Tween, and XZ 372 commanded by SSgt Daly, flown by Lt Tilley; with Lynx XZ 215, commanded by Capt Avery US Army and his pilot Sgt Isherwood, in support. In the foreground are Lynx XZ 199 commanded by Capt Morley and flown by SSgt Seymour, engaging Iraqi armour, and Lynx XZ 221, commanded by Sgt Maddison and flown by Cpl Long, engaging enemy MTLBs. The aircraft destroyed four enemy tanks and six enemy personnel carriers without loss. The attack was commanded by Major Eustace, from Gazelle XZ 338 flown by Sgt Church, and was the first ever use by the British Army of Lynx TOW missiled in combat. |
