David Rowlands
David Rowlands has had a passion for sketching British soldiers and their equipment ever since he was a boy. After completing his studies at Manchester University in 1977, he joined the staff of the Reading Room at the National Army Museum, working full-time as a professional artist. Keenly interested in the history of British campaigns, uniforms and tactics, he has painted many historical battle scenes with great attention to accuracy and detail. This has resulted in widespread recognition of his work with the result that he has been commissioned to record the activities of many Regiments in the present day. These commissions have taken him frequently to Northern Ireland, as well as Germany, Cyprus, Hong Kong and Gibraltar. In 1991 David Rowlands was the only artist invited by the Army to visit the Gulf. Attached to a Warrior crew of 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, he observed the work of the various Arms at first hand, enabling him to complete many accurate paintings for Regiments and Corps engaged in the conflict. Early in 1993 he was the first war artist to visit Bosnia and record the British troops in Operation GRAPPLE 1. Invited by Headquarters National Support Element, he travelled extensively on convoys and sketched the operations from Split to Vitez and Travnik. Several paintings have been commissioned by the participating units, including one of 7 Armoured Workshop REME at Gornji Vakul. Over the past ten years David has been sent regularly to Iraq and Afghanistan for projects involving many of the British and Nato forces. He has probably spent as much time overseas gathering information for these projects as he has spent in the UK. He is certainly one of the major military artists of the past 20 years. Many of these fine paintings are now available as signed edtion art prints and canvases. |

Combat Outpost by David Rowlands. 16 Air Assault Brigade deployed on Operation HERRICK, Afghanistan, from March to October 2006. The establishment of Combat Outposts and District Centres within Helmand Province by the 3 PARA Battlegroup was a key element of the operation. Throughout the deployment, the soldiers in these remote and austere locations were involved in some of the most intense fighting for a generation. This scene of the Combat Outpost in Now Zad depicts one of the Rear Link Detachments of 216 Parachute Signal Squadron which established and maintained vital communication links to both the Battlegroup and Brigade Headquarters from all of the isolated outposts. |

Belfast Patrol by David Rowlands. 45 Commando Royal Marines performed the role of the Belfast Roulement Battalion from 2nd July to 10th November 1986. This painting depicts a foot patrol setting out from Springfield Road RUC Station. The RUC Station at Springfield Road was 45 Commando's Tactical HQ. With its fortress-like protective fencing it stood cheek-by-jowl among little terraced houses. Marines escorted the constables of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) on their beat, both on foot and in Land Rovers. A sign warned: Do Not Stand Around In This Yard. Holes made by bullets and shrapnel from bombs tossed over the fence explained the reason why. In the painting I have tried to make the gate a symbolic focal point, as the men's thoughts are focussed upon what lies outside for this patrol. |

The 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's Regiment at the Battle of Sittang Bridge, Burma, February 1942 by David Rowlands. In December 1941, Japan entered the Second World War and invaded southern Burma. 17th Indian Infantry Division withdrew to the Sittang River to prevent the Japanese reaching the bridge first, which would have allowed them free access to Rangoon. 2nd Bn The Duke of Wellington's Regiment was rushed from India to join the rearguard.The river, spanned by the railway bridge, was fast-flowing and nearly 1000 yards wide. The bridge was prepared for demolition. Troops mainly from the Indian Army were defending the bridgehead, having suffered severe casualties during a fighting retreat over many days. By 22nd February the Divisional commander decided that he had little choice but to order the demolition of the bridge, knowing that two-thirds of his Division would be stranded on the far bank.As the two central spans of the bridge were blown, the exhausted troops continued fighting to prevent the Japanese securing the bridgehead. This allowed many troops to continue to cross the bridge with the aid of ropes, and rafts made from anything that would float. Others had to swim. The demolition of the bridge was the greatest disaster in the epic fighting retreat of the small, outnumbered British force in Burma, which covered nearly 1,000 miles in three and a half months. |

Battle of Louisbourg during the French and Indian Wars, A British Force set out to capture the French Fortress of Louisbourg at Cape Breton island. A Army of New Englanders under the command of Col. William Pepperell supported by an English Fleet under Commander Peter Warren. Attacked the Fortress of Louisbourg on April 30th 1745 and finally captured the fortress on June 17th. A great British Victory which endangered the French position in North America. The fortifications were handed back to France in 1748 in the treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle. |
