Harry Payne Very prolific artist who produced many military illustrations for books and postcard series, often collaborating with his brother Arthur, but did paint several battle pictures in oil, his most famous canvas being the Queen's Bays at Lucknow (Queen's Dragoon Guards) showing the routing of a body of mutineers by the 2nd Dragoon Guards under Major W H Seymour outside Lucknow on March 6th 1858. Payne's other battle scenes in oil include Villers en Couchies, 24th April 1794 (15th / 19th King's Royal Hussars) painted in 1894 and presented to the regiment the following year, Shangani River (Private Collection), and The Charge of the Scots Greys and Gordon Highlanders at Waterloo (Private Collection). Payne always fancied himself as a soldier and served for some years in the West Kent Yeomanry, reaching the rank of sergeant in the 1890s. |

Storming of the Taku Forts, China War, 1860 by Harry Payne A force of around 2,500 British and 400 French troops advanced on the Upper Northern Taku Fort on 1st August 1860. Depicted here are the men of the 67th (South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot as they scale the walls to capture the fort. The war is nowadays known as the Second Opium War and the regiment as of 1992 is part of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. |

Victoria Cross Winners of the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry by Harry Payne. (PC) During the battle of Kooshab in the Persian War of 1857, Lt. Moore and Lt. Malcolmson were both awarded the Victoria Cross for acts of bravery. Lt. Moore charged his horse at a solid enemy square, jumping the animal into the deadly bayonets. His horse, though killed in the action, created a gap in the square through which the rest of the cavalry poured, breaking the square. Lt. Moore was now surrounded by the enemy with no horse and with a broken sword. Spotting this peril, Lt. Malcolmson rode back to rescue Lt. Moore in the moment depicted here. |
