Scorched Earth - Battle of Britain

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. Winston Churchill. This DVD tells the story of those referred to by Winston Churchill as the few, the handful of courageous young Allied fighter pilots who flew time and again to defy the mighty Luftwaffe. At a time when Nazi Germany had swept all before it and Hitlers eyes were fixed firmly on English shores, the remarkable men of the RAF formed an impenetrable line of defence, risking all to protect our borders. Featuring powerful archive footage and expert comment and analysis. Narrated by Mike Leighton.

Scorched Earth - German Fighters

In its prime the German Air Force possessed some of the greatest fighters the world had ever seen. Famous names like the Messerschmitt BF 109, the Focke-Wulf 190 and, of course, the dreaded Stuka secured Germany early success during their campaign across Europe. By the end of World War Two the once mighty Luftwaffe was a pitiful shadow of its former self; a beaten force, shattered by the massive superiority of Allied airpower. With extensive 3D computer graphics, expert analysis and rare footage taken from both Allied and German sources, this DVD looks at the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe during World War Two. Narrated by Graham McTavish.

Kamikaze - To Die for the Emperor.

Named after the Divine Wind which twice intervened to prevent invasion by Kubla Khans armies in the 13th Century, the Kamikaze pilots symbolised the lengths the Japanese Imperial Forces were prepared to go to when faced with defeat. Opposed by the might of the American Fleet rebuilt after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the Imperial seal of approval was given to suicide air attacks on the enemy stalking them in the Pacific. Honoured for its purity, suicide was shrouded in ceremony and mysticism, capturing the Samurai spirit. It took several military forms when Japan withdrew from the League of Nations after occupying Manchuria in 1931. Ramming techniques were refined alongside the development of human bombs, bullets, torpedoes, flying bombs as the suicide tactics struck terror into the hearts of men fighting to live confronted by men determined to die. But it was the suicide pilots, dubbed Black Edged Cherry Blossoms who were the central figures in this savage saga. Rare archive action film captures the nightmare chaos of the Pacific War as the air becomes thick with tracer bullets and belching smoke as the sea foams with destruction. Defeat followed the gradual depletion of men and machines, as the Banzai tactics led to mass suicide, but not before the American Navy had been forced back by the Japanese onslaught, and the world had caught a glimpse of the Samurai mentality as a whole nation from the Emperor downwards were ready to die, and frequently did.

The Messerschmitt BF 109.

By the outbreak of the Second World War, the German Luftwaffe possessed more than 3,500 frontline aircraft. Over one third of these were single engine fighters and for the next six years one of these fighters would become the flagship of the German fighter force - the Messerschmitt BF 109. This legendary aircraft remained in operational service throughout the war, fighting on all fronts and in doing so was responsible for shooting down twice as many enemy aircraft as any other fighter plane in the annals of military history.

Scorched Earth : Luftwaffe.

Fascinating archive footage from German and Allied sources forms the basis of the Scorched Earth series, complemented by magnificent animation sequences, maps and graphics, new footage of surviving relics from around the world and interviews with the worlds foremost military historians.
