The Magnificent Fight by John D Shaw.

The valor shown by those who defended Wake Island against impossible odds from the day of the first Japanese attack on December 8th 1941 through December 23rd 1941, has never been surpassed. Though generally known as the battle which brought the US Marine Corps worldwide admiration in World War Two, men of the US Navy, Army and certain civilians also fought with distinction. Though suffering great hardship as Prisoners of War, the spirit of this group was never broken, and remains steadfast to this day amongst those who live to tell first hand the story of a truly Magnificent Fight.

F4F Pilot, VMF-211. David was born March 14th, 1917, on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, Birney, Montana, to Peter and Katherine Kliewer, who were Mennonite missionaries. David was the fifth of six children. His family moved to Bluffton, Ohio, where he graduated from high school in 1935. He then attended Wheaton College, where he graduated in 1939 with a degree in physics. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in order to learn how to fly and to support his close brother Paul's medical education. As a Marine fighter pilot, he was stationed on Wake Island in the Pacific, where he was captured by the Japanese two weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack. He then spent four years as a POW in Japan. He was awarded the Silver Star for his service. His war experience had a great impact on him leading to a strong belief in peace, nonviolence and service to others. After applying to Harvard Medical School from POW camp, he was accepted for his medical training. He graduated in 1951 cum laude and finished his internship, residency and chief residency at New York Hospital of Cornell University in 1956. While there, he met and married Jean Dulin, a nurse at New York Hospital. They were married in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1952. David Kliewer passed away on 21st March 2007.

John D Shaw

John D Shaw, a native of Nevada, USA, was born in 1961 and began his career in art and graphics in the early 80s. Beginning as an illustrator, Shaw creeated commercial artwork for a wide variety of clients, such as Lucasfilms Ltd, Major League Baseball, and several major entertainment software companies. In 1993 his work took a major turn when he began creating paintings with an historical aviation theme, paying special attention to the World War II era. His award winning depictions of these aircraft, people and the missions in which they paricipated have proven extremely popular, particularly throughout the United States, and have illustrated numerous publications. He has been exhibited extensively throughout the US and the rest of the world and his limited edition prints have enjoyed a huge amount of success, with many of his editions completely sold out and trading for considerable sums on the secondary market.
