Skeoch Cumming Cumming painted numerous military events in oil and particularly water-colour, focusing on the colonial wars of the late nineteenth century, although he did produce several retrospective works, such as Piper George Clark of the 71st encouraging his regiment at the Battle of Vimiera (Scottish United Services Museum), and The night before Waterloo (5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards). He exhibited two pictures, probably water-colours depicting events from the second Afghan War at the Royal Military Exhibition in 1890, and two Boer War paintings at the Royal Academy in 1903 and 1904: The Black Watch on the trek and The Defence of a Kraal: 1st Life Guards at Diamond Hill, 11th June 1900.
