J.B. Macdonald

John Blak Macdonald - Scottish painter born in 1829 in Boharm, Morayshire, Scotland. John Blake MacDonald came to Edinburgh, and in 1852 entered as a student at the Trustees Academy, studying subsequently under Scott Lauder. John MacDonald initially started as a figure-painter, but he moved into the historical paintings of the Jacobite period subjects. In 1857 he exhibited a portrait of Hugh Miller, and in 1859 one of Dr. John Brown in the Royal Scottish Academys Exhibition. John Blake MacDonald was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1862 and in 1863 MacDonald exhibited one of his best-known works, Lochaber no more - Prince Charlie leaving Scotland, which is now held in Dundee Art Gallerries. In 1877 John Blake MacDonald became a full Academician most of his paintings from this time on were of landscapes in both oil and watercolour, mainly of Scottish highland scenes in Perthshire, the Fife coast and Arran. He was an original member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water-Colours. John Blake MacDonald died in December 1901. His main paintings are Lochaber no More, Glencoe 1692, The meeting of Flora Macdonald and Prince Charlie and a number of major Scottish Landscapes.
