Major Hugh G Bruce (deceased)
*Signature Value : £40

Joined the Royal Marines in 1937, serving aboard HMS Rodney. On the night of 24th May 1940, he and his company of Marines landed at Calais with the object of defending the citadel of the town. They were besieged by the XIX Panzer Corps and he was captured while attempting to escape. Moved around several camps and continually attempting to escape, at Marlag in April 1942 he and 11 other officers escaped through a 250 yard hand excavated tunnel. He was recaptured within yards of the Danish border and eventually sent to the infamous Colditz Castle in September 1942. Despite being involved in numerous escape attempts, he remained in Colditz until liberation in April 1945. Post-war he became second in command of 40 Commando before joining the Special Boat Service in 1950 and taking its command in 1952. He retired from the military in 1957 and had a long career in the maritime industry. He died on 9th January 2003.
