text from c.1979 follows :

Captain John C Kelly-Rogers was born on 8th February 1905 at Kingstown, Co. Dublin. Educated at Presentation College, Clongowes Wood College and in the cadet training ship HMS Conway he went to sea as a Midshipman in the Royal Navy Reserve in the aircraft carrier HMS Argus and later in the destroyer Wild Swan. He then joined the Shaw Savill and Albion Shipping Company rising to the rank of Fourth Officer by 1925.

In 1927 he joined the Royal Air Force. After training at 5 FTS he was posted to the Flying Boat Training Establishemnt at Calshot. Thereafter he spent most of his service career flying waterborne aircraft in various parts of the world.

In 1935 he joined Imperial Airways. He flew as First Officer on Short Kents, and was promoted to Captain in which rank he flew the Short Calcutta.

In 1938 Captain Kelly-Rogers conducted early flight refuelling tests and used this system in 1939 when commanding the first scheduled westbound and eastbound air mail flights across the Atlantic made by a European operator. In 1940 he commaned the first westbound and eastbound British Atlantic flights carrying passengers. Earlier that year he conducted the first flights from England to evacuate refugees following the fall of France.

Because of a shortage of long range aircraft, the British Government purchased 3 Boeing 314A Clipper flying boats. He became Chief Pilot, North Atlantic and with them inaugurated in 1941, BOAC's all-the-year-round Atlantic flying boat service.

In 1942 Captain Kelly-Rogers was appointed Superintendent of BOAC's Atlantic flying boat operations, in 1944 Manager of the Atlantic Division, and in 1945 Regional Technical Manager.

On 1st February 1947 he left BOAC to become Technical Manager of Aer Lingus / Aerlinte Eireann and Technical Advisor to Aer Rianta. In February 1948 he was made Assistant General Mnager (Technical) of the 3 Companies and Deputy General Manager in December 1952 in which post he remained until retirement on 31st March 1965. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of Aerlinte Eireann by the Minister of Transport and Power on 1st April 1965. Captain Kelly-Rogers was a member of the Technical Committee of the International Air Transport Association from 1947 until 1965 and was Chairman of the Committee during 1951 and 1952.

End of c.1979 text.
He died on 29th January 1981.
