![]() George Kimbell (deceased) *Signature Value : £120 | A seaman who served during the First World War, he was aboard submarine K17 on the night of 31st January - 1st February 1918, a night which became known as the 'Battle of May Island'. No enemy were involved, but a serious of disastrous collisions between British surface ships and submarines in the mist of the Firth of Forth left over 100 men lost and two K Class submarines sunk, including George's K17. Only 8 of the crew survived the sinking - 56 had been aboard the submarine. Our sources show us that he was alive in 1987 taking part in commemorations 69 years after the event, but we have no further information. |
