Clipped Signature - John Dixon Joining the RAF on a short service commission in December 1938, his early career was turbulent - initially deemed unsuitable as a fighter pilot, he was sent for further training before being posted to No. 1 Squadron in France in May 1940 where he was shot down over St. Nazaire in June, sustaining a eye injury. After a rapid return to flying, he moved to ferry duties, during which he suffered several forced landings due to engine failures. A court martial in 1941 for stealing railway warrants led to his dismissal, though he was able to rejoin the RAF as a Sergeant Pilot and went on to distinguished service with 528 Squadron on radar calibration flights over the Channel in preparation for D-Day, earning a Mention in Dispatches, and later as a test pilot developing the Centaurus engine for which he was awarded the Air Force Cross. After a brief civilian spell he rejoined the RAF once more in Air Traffic Control, eventually being re-commissioned and retiring as a Flight Lieutenant in May 1973. He died on 16th December 1998.
