Blue -Fire! by Michael Rondot.

Buccaneer aircraft in action, launching a co-ordinated attack with Sea Eagle anti-ship sea-skimming missiles, the moment when the leader of the first element (callsign Blue) achieves his firing solution and initiates the ripple launch of his formations missiles by breaking radio silence with the traditional 208 Squadron radio call of Blue,-Fire! Nightmare scenario. Dusk over an empty sea. With lights out and in radio silence, three Buccaneers, each armed with 4 Sea-Eagle missiles, prepare to attack a Surface Action Group still beyond radar range. 150 miles away, three more Buccaneers are approaching the same target in a pincer attack timed to hit the target at exactly the same time. The first warning that the target will receive of the attack is when all 24 missile radar seekers switch on at close range for the final phase of the attack. Whilst the Buccaneers escape unseen, the defenses will be swamped with their worst nightmare - two volleys of missiles approaching without warning, at wave-top height, at 180 degrees to each other.

An engineer known for his design of the Buccaneer, he went on to become Chief Designer of the Hawker division of the famed aviation company Hawker Siddeley, and was Director for Military Projects in the late 1960s. He died on 6th October 2012.

*Signature Value : £10

Wing Commander Bill Cope was the Officer Commanding the Buccaneer Gulf War Detachment and when asked why the Buccaneers had been detached to the Gulf when there were already Tornadoes in that location, he answered: 'The Buccaneer is like my grandmother – old but formidable!'. The proof of that statement came when No.208 Sqn was tasked with 108 sorties, all of which were successful. All Squadron personnel were awarded the Gulf War Medal, as well as the Saudi and Kuwaiti medals for that campaign. Wg Cdr Cope was also awarded the Order of Bahrain for his part in the action.
The Aircraft :
NameInfo
BuccaneerThe Buccaneer. Designed for high-speed, deep penetration attacks at ultra low level, the Buccaneer has always been immensely popular with its aircrews. The design may be old, but the concept was brilliant, and the Buccaneer still retains a unique combination of range, war load and speed, unmatched by any other aircraft in RAF service. Pressed into service during the Gulf War, Buccaneers finally proved in the most spectacular manner what many had known for years - that the only suitable replacement aircraft for the Buccaneer is another Buccaneer.

Michael Rondot

Michael Rondot is well known in the military aviation world for his distinctive style of aircraft paintings and prints which have made him one of todays most widely collected aviation artists. During his 25 year career as a pilot in the Royal Air Force he flew over 5000 hours in combat jets, including Jaguar fighter bombers during the Gulf War, bringing a unique authority to his paintings that sets them in a class of their own. His portrayals of classic combat aircraft are much sought-after by both aviators and enthusiasts alike for their realism and powerful atmospheric settings.
