North Atlantic Companions by Ivan Berryman. Short Sunderland Mk.1 L5798 (DA-A) of 210 Sqn, based at Pembroke, dips her wings in salute to HMS Hood as she punches through the North Atlantic swell early in 1941. By May of that year, this mighty ship would be gone, lost with all but three of her crew, a victim of the might of the German Navy at the savage hands of the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. |

Becalmed - HMS Victory in the Doldrums by Ivan Berryman. Two of Admiral Horatio Nelson's ships lie becalmed together, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. The 74-gun HMS Captain basks ahead of the mighty HMS Victory, the ship that would ultimately lead the British fleet into battle against the combined might of the Spanish and French fleets at Trafalgar in 1805. |

HMS Bulldog - Operation Primrose by Ivan Berryman. The Spring of 1941 saw the German U.110 damaged from previous attacks and, on 9th May, she was forced to the surface and surrender to HMS Bulldog. U.110 was carrying the top secret Enigma Machine and code book and her capture helped Bletchley Park codebreakers solve Reservehandverfahren, which was a reserve German hand cipher. U.110 was taken in tow but was deliberately sunk to prevent its capture being revealed to the enemy. |
The Taking of the Lady Grace by Ivan Berryman. Although entirely fictitious, this scene depicts a typical action by pirates in the early 1700s, most likely in the Caribbean where the many supply routes from Europe converged and offered rich pickings. Although fraught with danger, the rewards for the buccaneers were rich and plenty, many of them rising to great notoriety for their daring exploits. |
Albacore at Cape Matapan by Ivan Berryman. A Fairey Albacore of 826 Naval Air Squadron releases its torpedo at the Battle of Cape Matapan, 28th March 1941. With intelligence from deciphered Italian communications aiding them, the British fleet had a distinct advantage from the outset of this battle. However, gaining a torpedo hit on the well protected battleship Vittorio Veneto came at a price - Lt Com Dalyell-Stead and the crew of his Fairey Albacore got close enough to launch their torpedo and damage the battleship, but were killed when their aircraft was brought down by the hail of anti-aircraft fire returned. Ultimately, the battle was a massive British victory with several Italian capital ships sunk, but it was a notable victory for innovation and intelligence, with British ship-borne radar decisive in a night action, and code-breaking by Bletchley Park aiding the British fleet. |

HMS Resolution at Gibraltar by Ivan Berryman. Launched in January 1915, the Revenge-class battleship HMS Resolution was to enjoy a 33 year career during which she served in the Atlantic, home and Eastern Fleets as well as serving repeated spells in the Mediterranean, being both bombed and torpedoed along the way. She is depicted off Gibraltar with HMS Wolverine, the destroyer perhaps best remembered for destroying the U-47 which sunk Resolutions sister ship Royal Oak in Scapa Flow. |

U-997 by Ivan Berryman. A Type VIIC U-boat, U-997 was one of lucky ones to survive the war. One of around 700 of the Type VIIs - the workhorse of the German U-boat threat - it was an example of the 91 Type VIIC/41 variety, one of which is the only surviving Type VII in existence (U-995 is a memorial in Germany). U-997 served between September 1943 and the end of the war when the submarine was surrendered and subsequently sunk by Allied aircraft with more than 100 other U-boats during Operation Deadlight, north-west of Ireland. |

Warm Work by Ivan Berryman. The time is approximately 12.20pm on 21st October 1805. HMS Victory forces her way through the combined Spanish and French line, firing all her larboard guns into the stern of Admiral Villeneuve’s flagship. Bucentaure was utterly destroyed by the initial salvo with twenty of her guns smashed off their mounts and over 300 of her crew left dead or disabled. But Victory herself had suffered much during the perilous approach to the enemy fleet. Unable to bring any guns to bear, she received multiple hits from the Franco-Spanish ships, bringing down her mizzen top, her fore topgallant mast, her studding sails and smashing the ship’s wheel. The bowsprit, part of her figurehead and catheads were shattered, her anchors carried away and the entire bow, headrails and beakhead were peppered with shot. The title of the painting refers to a comment made by Admiral Horatio Nelson as HMS Victory began to receive fire from the enemy. A piece of hot shrapnel tore the buckle off Nelson’s shoe as he paced the deck with Captain Hardy, to which he responded, “It is warm work today!” Sadly, just one hour later, Nelson was fatally wounded by a sharpshooter stationed on the mizzen top of the French Redoutable which can be seen to the left of the painting. The towering spectre of HMS Temeraire looms in the gunsmoke as she follows HMS Victory into the fray. |

Lone Wolf by Ivan Berryman. The Type VII U-Boat became the standard design for German submarine warfare during the Second World War, sometimes hunting in packs, but more often alone. This Type VIIC has just claimed another victim, surfacing under the cover of night to observe the fiery demise of another victim. |
U-861 - Tribute to Jürgen Oesten by Ivan Berryman. Launched in 1943, U-861 was a Type IXD2 submarine commanded by Jürgen Oesten. Having previously commanded U-61 and U-106 successfully, he took U-861 to the Far East on a journey that took several months, sinking ships off Brazil and Madagascar on the way. Returning in early 1945, the submarine struck an iceberg off Greenland but managed to reach Trondheim in Norway without any casualties. Here, the U-boat was surrendered. Scuttled off the north of Ireland by the Allies, the wreck is now a dive site. Jürgen Oesten was awarded the Knight's Cross and sunk a shipping tonnage in excess of 100,000. He died in 2010. |

HMS Repulse with HMS Prince of Wales Under Attack by Ivan Berryman Mitsubishi G4Ms of 27 Kanoya Kokutai begin their devastating attack on Force Z off the north east coast of Malaya on 10th December 1941. Both Repulse and prince of Wales were lost in the attack, while their accompanying destroyers remained to pick up survivors among them HMS Express which can be seen off HMS Repulse starboard quarter. |
