HMS Cyclops Prepares to Receive HMS Sceptre by Ivan Berryman Originally constructed as a Home Fleet Repair Ship, HMS Cyclops was later converted into a submarine depot ship and enjoyed a long career, both in the Mediterranean and in home waters. Here she prepares to receive HMS Sceptre. Another S-class submarine is already tethered alongside. |
HMS Vanguard by Ivan Berryman. Nelsons Flagship Vanguard is seen departing St Helens Anchorage heading a convoy of merchantmen en route to Lisbon and the Mediterranean on 8th April 1798. This voyage would culminate in the Battle of the Nile where the British fleet routed that of the French at Aboukir Bay on the evening of 1st August that same year. |
Hearts of Oak Ivan Berryman. It is September 18th, 1805, off Plymouth. Led by the 74-gun HMS Thunderer, with HMS Ajax astern, HMS Victory, with Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson aboard, begins her journey south to join the rest of the British fleet off Cadiz where the combined French and Spanish fleets lay blockaded. This was the prelude to the Battle of Trafalgar and the last time Nelson would see his beloved England. |
Deutschland at Baltimore Harbour by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On 9th July 1916, with Captain Paul Koenig in command, the German merchant submarine Deutschland entered Baltimore Harbour after a 16-day crossing of the Atlantic from Bremerhaven on a peaceful trade mission and was greeted by a flotilla of tugs and small sight-seeing vessels. Upon arrival in the bay, the German merchant flag was hoisted and many of her 29 crew appeared on her narrow deck to enjoy the moment. The visit was greeted with considerable controversy at the time, given that Europe was at this time at war with Germany, but this unusual event passed peacefully with Deutschland returning home safely the following month. |

RMS Titanic. Ship of Dreams by Ivan Berryman. The elegant but ill-fated jewel in the White Star crown Titanic was a technical marvel of engineering in its day. At 882 ft long, her perfect proportions and magnificent profile were the envy of other shipping companies. Her tragic loss on her maiden voyage was a crushing blow to the White Star Line that left the whole world in shock. |

A Night Action off Cadiz by Ivan Berryman. Skirmishes between frigates were a common occurrence, such as here when the 32-gun HMS Amphion encountered a French opponent off Cadiz in 1806 the latter, to her great cost, straying among the British inshore squadron in the darkness of a moonless night. It is understood that the French vessel managed to escape being taken as a prize, although with much damage to her whales and rigging. |
North Atlantic Predator by Ivan Berryman. U-99 was commanded by Otto Kretschmer from launch in 1940 until being sunk in March 1941, less than a year later. However, during this time U-99 became one of the most successful submarines of the war, claiming almost 40 ships sunk. Attached to each side of the coning tower is a horseshoe, dredged up by the anchor, painted gold and positioned here for luck. This luck ran out on 17th March 1941 when the destroyers HMS Walker and HMS Vanoc discovered and successfully attacked U-99. Forced to the surface by severe damage, the submarine was then scuttled while forty of the crew including Kretschmer were rescued to become prisoners of war. |

HMS Dreadnought S101 by Ivan Berryman. Launched on Trafalgar Day, 1960, HMS Dreadnought was the Royal Navy's first nuclear powered submarine, entering service in 1963. She is depicted here in the Firth of Forth with the iconic Forth Bridge in the background in December 1963 when she was docked at Rosyth for re-coating of her hull and a general examination. |
Moonlight Despatch by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The role of the frigate in Nelson's navy was one of the most varied of all the ships of the line, but their great speed made them ideal as communications vessels, carrying vital despatches between ships, squadrons and the Admiralty. |
The Battle of Trafalgar, 2.30pm. The Taking of the Santisima Trinidad by Ivan Berryman Dominating the centre foreground, the wreck of the largest ship at Trafalgar, the massive four decker Santisima Trinidad (130 guns), comes under further attack from the British Neptune (98 guns) All her masts have fallen, rendering the Spanish giant an unmanageable hulk. Elsewhere, the battle rages on with Temeraire and Victory engaged with the French Redoubtable, while to the right of the picture, the shattered, drifting remains of Villeneuves Bucentaure (80 guns) is approached by the Mars (74 guns) Conqueror (74 guns), off the Santisima Trinidads port quarter, is keeping up a distant fire to assist the Neptune. |

HMS Rodney by Ivan Berryman HMS Rodney was launched in 1925, and like her sister ship the Nelson, Rodney saw action in many theatres, scoring the first hit on the Bismarck among other memorable exploits. |
HMS Emerald and HMS Enterprise by Ivan Berryman. Of the three E-Class cruisers proposed at the end of World War 1, only two were ever completed, Euphrates being cancelled when the war with Germany ended in 1918. The two sisters, Emerald and Enterprise, enjoyed long and varied careers, the former remaining largely unchanged from her original appearance, the latter being much modified. The two ships are shown together at anchor off Trincomalie between the wars. |
Return to Taranto by Ivan Berryman. The Italian destroyer Alfredo Oriani slips quietly through the open span of the swing bridge at Taranto after a long Mediterranean mission. This ship was present at the Battle of Matapan in March 1941 and was successful against Allied shipping during Operation Harpoon the following year. After the armistice, she was laid up at Malta and was eventually presented to the French navy at the end of the war as reparation, whereupon the Oriani was renamed D'Estaing and served under the French flag until 1954. |
Bismarck Replies to HMS Hood by Ivan Berryman. The mighty Bismarck returns fire to the fast-approaching HMS Hood at the start of a battle that would see both adversaries tragically sunk. The Bismarck would later be attacked by Swordfish aircraft from HMS Ark Royal, damaging her stearing and allowing her to be caught by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. The once proud German battleship would be ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck and finally finished by HMS Dorsetshire with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941. HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori combed the area of the sinking for survivors, between them picking up a total of 110 out of an original complement of 2,300. |

HMS Ark Royal and HMS Sheffield off the Mole, Gibraltar by Ivan Berryman. Having played a vital part in the battle for the Mediterranean for over two years, HMS Ark Royal finally succumbed to a U-Boats torpedo in November 1941. HMS Ark Royal (1970s Carrier) by Ivan Berryman. HMS Ark Royal was the fourth ship in the Royal Navy to bear this memorable name. By far the most impressive, this mighty ship was built to include the angled flight deck, a revolutionary development at the time, with steam catapult. The end of fixed wing aircraft saw Ark Royal quickly become obsolete, being paid off in 1978. |
