U-47 by Ivan Berryman. Under the command of Günther Prien, the deadly U-47 became the 10th most successful U-Boat of World War Two in terms of tonnage sunk. However, on 8th October 1939 she sank the British battleship HMS Royak Oak within Scapa Flow, the main British naval base of the war, despite the anti-submarine measures in place. The submarine was presumed lost with all hands when she failed to return from her 10th patrol in March 1941, although no definitive explanation for her loss exists. |
Tribute to Lt Cdr Eric 'Winkle' Brown by Ivan Berryman. One of the most experienced and respected test pilots in history, Eric 'Winkle' Brown carried out the first landing and take off by a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier on 3rd December 1945. This was accomplished in the second prototype De Havilland Vampire LZ551/G which had been extensively modified for the sole purpose of carrier operations. Not only was an arrester hook added, but the aircraft featured larger flaps and was fitted with the more powerful Goblin 2 engine. The first take off by a jet from an aircraft carrier is depicted here as Lt Cdr Brown lifts away from the deck of HMS Ocean on that momentous day. |
Dunkirk by Ivan Berryman. Between 24th may and 4th June 1940 an extraordinary armada of craft, large and small, naval and civilian, embarked on one of the greatest rescue missions in history. the evacuation of 330,000 British and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in northern France. the destroyer HMS Shikari dominates the foreground here as troops pour onto the beaches and harbour moles in search of salvation. MTB are seen picking up troops and taking them to ships further out including MTB102. Also shown is a paddle steamer with very shallow draft taking on troops close to the beach and in the distance HMS Grafton can be seen taking troops from the mole. She was lost later during the evacuation. |
The Battle of Trafalgar, 1.00pm by Ivan Berryman. Having taken terrible punishment from the guns of the allied French and Spanish fleet as she broke through the line, HMS Victory found herself engaged by the French Redoutable, a bitter battle that saw the two ships locked together, pouring shot into one another with terrifying ferocity and which left the British Admiral, Lord Horatio Nelson fatally wounded. In the background, HMS Neptune is emerging through the gunsmoke and is about to pass the wreck of the French flagship Bucentaure which Victory so spectacularly routed as she passed through the allied line. HMS Temeraire, which followed Victory through, and which was also to become embroiled on the Redoutables fight, is obscured by the smoke beyond the British flagship. |
HMS Ajax by Ivan Berryman. HMS Ajax was built as a light cruiser at Barrow and launched in 1935. She saw service initially in the American and West Indies theatre before temporary commission in the Mediterranean. Then followed her never to be forgotten role in the Battle of the River Plate ending in the scuttling of the Graf Spee. The Battle of Cape St Vincent - Nelsons Patent Bridge by Ivan Berryman. As the early morning fog and mist began to clear on 14th February 1797, the British squadron commanded by Admiral Jervis spotted two columns of Spanish ships and immediately set off in pursuit. Horatio Nelson was stationed at the very rear of the British squadron in HMS Captain and, from this vantage point Nelson suspected that the Spanish would form into a single fighting unit and he feared that they would attempt to encircle the British ships and attack them in the round. Against orders to the contrary, Nelson broke away and sailed directly at the Spanish line to intercept them. A fierce artillery battle ensued with the San Josef losing her mizzen mast and HMS Captain having her fore top shot away. Damage to the San Nicolas was such that she became uncontrollable and crashed heavily into the San Josef, at which point Nelson drove his ship into the pair of them, personally leading the boarding party to take both ships as prizes. This daring manoeuvre became known as Nelsons Patent Bridge for Boarding First Rates and alerted the Admiralty to young Nelsons bravado and courage. |

The Battle of the Nile by Ivan Berryman. Sunset over Aboukir Bay on 1st August 1798 as ships of the Royal Navy, led by Nelson, conduct their ruthless destruction of the anchored French fleet. To the left Saumarezs HMS Orion is moving into position on the Peuple Souvrain, while her starboard guns rake one of the French frigates inshore. Orion, like the Goliath, Zealous and Audacious, had slipped inside the line of the unprepared French fleet, while Nelson in the Vanguard directed a further eight ships to attack the outside, resulting in one of the most decisive naval victories ever. The French ships seen at anchor include Spartiate and Aquilon, whilst through the gap between Peuple Souvrain and the bowsprit of the Franklin, the British ships Defence and Minotaur can be seen approaching. |

U-453 by Ivan Berryman. The Type VIIC U-Boat U-453 began service in June 1941 under the command of Knight's Cross winner Egon-Reiner von Schlippenbach and claimed 10 vessels sunk including the Royal Navy minesweeper HMS Hebe. U-453 was sunk on 21st May 1944 by the destroyers HMS Tenacious, HMS Termagant and HMS Liddesdale off the coast of Italy. HMS Dido by Ivan Berryman. HMS Dido was launched on 18th July 1939, she took part in the evacuation of troops and defense of Crete, where she was damaged on B gun, killing 46 men. HMS Dido took part in the second Battle of Sirte during 1942, she sank three supply ships off North Africa. She also took part in the Anzio landings and the invasion of Southern France in August 1944. |
The Battle of Copenhagen – HMS Glattons Bravest Day by Ivan Berryman. The battle of Copenhagen was long and hard-fought and Admiral Parker ordered Admiral Nelson to withdraw, an order that Nelson ignored. At one point a Danish frigate moved swiftly to attack Nelsons flagship HMS Elephant, but Captain Bligh of HMS Glatton sailed his ship directly into the broadside to protect the flagship. The Glatton, already displaying some damage, somehow survived the terrible barrage inflicted to its hull by the low-firing Danish vessel. The Elephant was saved and the battle eventually won with the unconditional capitulation of Denmark. It was surely Captain Blighs finest hour and an act of selfless bravery. HMS Malaya at Capetown, South Africa. by Ivan Berryman. The Queen Elizabeth class battleship HMS Malaya is pictured at Capetown in April 1942 en route to Durban from Gibraltar. A veteran of the First World War, Malaya took part in the Battle of Jutland, receiving eight hits, and going on to serve throughout World War Two, surviving a torpedo off Cape Verde in 1941. She is seen here about to recover her Fairey Swordfish floatplane beneath the dramatic outline of Table Mountain. |
Exercise Tiger by Ivan Berryman. (PC) As part of a rehearsal for the impending D-Day landings on 6th June 1944, eight tank landing ships (LSTs), together with two destroyers, embarked most of their American troops on a British beach and began making their way to Slapton Sands. This was the night of 27th / 28th April and, unseen in the darkness of the night, a hunting party of German Schnellboots (S-Boats) were soon upon them. The painting depicts the awful demise of LST 507 who fell victim to the torpedoes of S-150 and S-130, the huge ship's cargo of trucks, jeeps and gasoline quickly bursting into an uncontrollable fire before she slipped beneath the waves. LST 531 was also sunk while LST 289 managed to struggle back to port. 197 American seamen and 441 GIs lost their lives on that fateful night, while all the Schnellboots returned safely, undamaged. S150, commanded by Oblt. z.S. Behr is nearest with S130, commanded by Oblt. z.S. Rabe is speeding past in the middle distance. |
Assault from the Deep by Ivan Berryman. Sitting menacingly at a depth of 15 metres below the surface, just 2 km outside the heavily defended harbour of Alexandria, the Italian submarine Scire is shown releasing her three manned torpedoes, or Maiali, at the outset of their daring raid in which the British battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant and a tanker, were severely damaged on 3rd December 1941. All six crew members of the three Maiali survived the mission, but all were captured and taken prisoner. Luigi Durand de la Penne and Emilio Bianchi can be seen moving away aboard 221, whilst Vincenzo Martellotta and Mario Marino (222) carry out systems checks. Antonio Marceglia and Spartaco Schergat, on 223, are heading away at the top of the picture. |
HMS Sickle by Ivan Berryman. An S-Class submarine of the Royal Navy, HMS Sickle took part in operations in the Mediterranean in the Second World War after an uneventful first patrol off Norway. On the morning of 23rd of April 1943, five days into her second war patrol, HMS Sickle intercepted the Italian merchant Mauro Croce as it left Spanish waters from Valencia. Two torpedoes were fired but passed under the target. Immediately the submarine surfaced and, as seen in this painting, opened fire with the 76mm deck gun, scoring 15 hits from 19 rounds fired before the weapon jammed. HMS Sickle dived and broke off the action, but Italians later claimed three killed and four wounded in their complaint that the attack happened in Spanish territory. That May, HMS Sickle went on to attack German U-Boat U-755 unsuccessfully, but next day torpedoed and sank U-303. On her 11th war patrol in June 1944, HMS Sickle disappeared and is thought to have been lost to mines while returning to Malta. |
Bismarck - Pride of the Kriegsmarine by Ivan Berryman. Together with her sister, Tirpitz, the Bismarck was Germany's most modern and formidable warship of WWII. Equipped with the very latest in rangefinder technology and festooned with defensive firepower, perhaps her most daunting weapons were the eight 15 inch guns, arranged in four turrets, that were to prove so effective against almost every other ship that she encountered, the most famous of these arguably being the Royal Navy's HMS Hood, sunk with huge loss of life in the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941.
