Mid Atlantic Dawn by Ivan Berryman. Upon hearing the news that Admiral Villeneuve and his squadron had headed across the Atlantic to the West Indies, Nelson, in HMS Victory, set off in pursuit early in June, 1805, in the hope of engaging the French there, thus preventing them from combining with the Spanish fleet that were blockaded in Cadiz. Nelsons squadron comprised the 74-gun Amazon, Swiftsure, Belleisle, Canopus, Conqueror, Donegal, Leviathan, Superb, Spencer and Tigre, plus the smaller Amphion (32) and Decade (36). The chase to Barbados and back was HMS Victorys only crossing of the Atlantic and proved fruitless, as Villeneuve had already escaped, but this action laid the ground for the Battle of Trafalgar in October of the same year. |
Pearl Harbor, USS California, by Anthony Saunders At dawn on the 7th December 1941, 350 Japanese warplanes flew from their carriers and attacked the US pacific fleet at Pearl harbor, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. the attack concentrated on Battleship Row which included USS California (Left) and USS Nevada (Right) which was the only battleship to get underway during the attack. However coming under intense bomb attack she was later beached. For the Japanese the success was not total, as the US carrier fleet was out on manoeuvres on the day of the attack. |
The Tenacious Belleisle by Ivan Berryman. Few ships fought more bravely than HMS Belleisle at the Battle of Trafalgar. Having been second in the line of Collingwood’s leeward division, the 74-gun Belleisle took on a number of opponents including the Monarca, Santa Ana and Indomtable, but soon found herself surrounded by enemy ships that poured weighty broadsides into her. By 2.30 in the afternoon, Bellisle was little more than a floating wreck, having lost all of her masts and bowsprit, yet still she fought bravely on, her colours flying defiantly from the stump of her mizzen mast. Belleisle survived her ordeal and was towed to Gibraltar after the battle where temporary repairs were made, arriving in Plymouth for a refit on 5th December 1805. |
North Atlantic Predator by Ivan Berryman. U-99 was commanded by Otto Kretschmer from launch in 1940 until being sunk in March 1941, less than a year later. However, during this time U-99 became one of the most successful submarines of the war, claiming almost 40 ships sunk. Attached to each side of the coning tower is a horseshoe, dredged up by the anchor, painted gold and positioned here for luck. This luck ran out on 17th March 1941 when the destroyers HMS Walker and HMS Vanoc discovered and successfully attacked U-99. Forced to the surface by severe damage, the submarine was then scuttled while forty of the crew including Kretschmer were rescued to become prisoners of war. |

Canberra and HMS Argonaut by Ivan Berryman. The P & O cruise liner Canberra lies in San Carlos Water, Falkland Islands, in May 1982, looking very weather-beaten after her punishing journey south during the conflict with Argentina, whilst HMS Argonaut keeps a watching vigil by her side. Both Argonaut and Canberra repeatedly came under air attack in San Carlos Water during the disembarkation of 42 Commando, both surviving the encounters, unlike the unfortunate HMS Ardent which was hit and sunk. |
U.123 - The Atik's Revenge by Ivan Berryman. On 27 March 1942, Q-ship USS Atik (AK 101) received a torpedo hit from the U.123, forward of her bridge structure. The ship caught fire and, as her bow dropped in the water, she developed a list to port. U.123 closed in to finish the ship off, at which point USS Atik uncovered her concealed weapons and raked the U-boat with 50mm fire, killing one of the German crew. U.123 was driven off, but she submerged and fired another torpedo into the Atik's engine room which was the final blow for the brave Q-ship. |
Raid on Taranto by Anthony Saunders The balance of maritime power in the Mediterranean was transformed at a stroke by the British air attack which disabled three Italian battleships in a few minutes. The target was the core of Mussolinis fleet, tucked away in Taranto Harbour, in southern Italy. The attack, codenamed Operation Judgement, took place in bright moonlight by twenty-one Swordfish from the British carrier HMS Illustrious. In the confined space of the harbour, their torpedoes had a devastating impact, at least nine torpedoes struck their targets. In all, seven ships were severely damaged, including the battleship Caio Duilio (left), Littorio (right) and Conte Di Cavour. |

HMS Victory - Home Before the Squall by Ivan Berryman. Against the darkening skies of an impending storm, HMS Victory is depicted entering Portsmouth Harbour. This iconic ship, launched in Chatham in 1765, is now preserved in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard on public display and is still a commissioned warship in the Royal Navy. Weighing 2,162 tons, Victory was crewed by 850 men and carried 104 guns on three decks. |

A Night Action off Cadiz by Ivan Berryman. Skirmishes between frigates were a common occurrence, such as here when the 32-gun HMS Amphion encountered a French opponent off Cadiz in 1806 the latter, to her great cost, straying among the British inshore squadron in the darkness of a moonless night. It is understood that the French vessel managed to escape being taken as a prize, although with much damage to her whales and rigging. |
Against All Odds by Robert Taylor. Robert Taylors painting protrays the renowned defiance of the U-Boat crews. Caught on the surface by a PBY Catalina the gun crews of a type VIIc U-Boat are quickly into action. The 3.7cm anti-aircraft gun is hurriedly reloaded while on the upper platform the two 2cm anti-aircraft twins take chunks out of the Catalinas tail - enough damage to secure a respite from the attack. Soon they will dive to relative safety beneath the Atlantic swell. |
Victory at Portsmouth 1805 by Ken Hammond. After Nelsons Atlantic chase of the French and Spanish fleets and just prior to the Battle of Trafalgar, Victory was at Spithead between 18th August and 15th September 1805. |
The Battle of the Nile by Anthony Saunders. Lord Horatio Nelson and the British fleet found the French 13 ship of the line fleet anchored at Aboukir Bay. Nelsons plan was to attack the French fleet on their unprotected port side. By the end of the battle nearly all the French ships were sunk or captured. The painting shows HMS Swiftsure in the centre with the burning 124 gun flagship LOrient behind. To the left is the surrendered hulk of the French ship Franklin. |

HMS Pegasus by Ivan Berryman. The last seaplane carrier built for the Admiralty, HMS Pegasus was launched in 1917 and benefited from all the lessons learned from her predecessors, possessing a flying-off platform forward, served by twin derricks, and a hangar and cranes aft, capable of carrying up to nine aircraft. Time to Go by Robert Barbour. A type VIIC U-boat of the German navys 6th-7th Flotilla slowly manouevres within the confines of the Saint Nazaire submarine pens. The type VIIC was armed with 4 torpedo tubes in the bow and one in the stern, and had a range of patrol of approximately 9,700 nautical miles. |
