Gerd-Dietrich Schneider (deceased)
An experienced mine-sweeping officer, Gerd-Dietrich Schneider was Captain of the minehunter R25 in early 1942 operating in the English Channel, and was part of the Channel Dash Task Force. Later, in the Black Sea, he participated in the German invasion of the Crimea, sinking 2 Russian submarines. He transferred to an artillery bombardment flotilla for the German defence of the Allied invasion of France in 1944, and then covered the German retreat in the Baltic from the Russians. He was awarded the Knights Cross in 1944. He died on 15th July 2004.
