Water Damaged Stock - Hugely Discounted

WATER-DAMAGED STOCK

As a result of building damage caused by a recent storm, a number of our prints were damaged to varying degrees by the water that subsequently got into one of our store rooms. A handful of prints were beyond salvage, but most were only partly affected by the water.

We have included some photos here of examples of the kind of damage on these prints. Mostly, one side or a corner has got wet and has rippled when it dried once again. In the worst cases, the rippling is likely to be visible even once the print is framed. For a few, the damage is confined to a corner or area small enough to probably go unnoticed once it is in place in the frame.

We can't realistically produce photos of the damage to each individual print - there are potentially many thousands affected. Instead, the price reduction for these prints will reflect the extent of the damage.

This is complicated slightly by the presence of pilot signatures on some of the prints. Often these retain their value as they are unaffected by the damage and can of course be cut from the print to be used elsewhere - i.e. matted with another print.

You will see we have nonetheless made drastic reductions to these items - pilot signed or otherwise. The images provided here show the worst case you can expect from the most reduced prints, and also the average level of damage on the majority of the prints.

Below is the reverse side of the same print and you can see the ripples are more noticeable on the plain back of the print. Most of the prints affected by the water have around this level of damage.

Another photo of one of the water affected prints, highlighting the ripple effect down the side of the print. It is very difficult to smooth out these ripples when framing - the high quality of the paper means they are fairly rigid.

This large image shows one of the print with the worst levels of damage to it. As you can see from the photos, a fairly large area of the print has been affected, but it is harder to see this on the printed side, especially in photographs. The prints are very obviously damaged when viewed in person, and most of that damage will be seen even when the print is framed. Prints like this one have been reduced the most - even with the 4 pilot signatures this print carries.

Banff Raiders by Stephen Brown. (W)

Based at Banff on the East Coast of Scotland, the Banff Strike Wing was formed in 1944. Its primary role was to combat the threat of enemy shipping operating from the bases deep within the Norwegian fjords.

Spitfires Safely Home by Stephen Brown. (W)

5K+AR Sole Survivor by Ivan Berryman. (W)

Shortly after mid day on 26th August 1940, a Bolton-Paul Defiant of 264 Sqn claimed a victory that was to make history many decades later. Dornier Do.17Z2, Wk No 1160 of 7/III KG.3 had been part of a raiding force sent to attack targets in Essex. Attacked from below, the Do.17 suffered terminal damage and came to rest in the shallow waters of the Goodwin Sands, near Deal in Kent. Two of her crew died in the incident, but two others survived and became prisoners of war. In June 2013, over seventy years later, 5K+AR was raised from the water to be put on display at the RAF Museum in Hendon, becoming the only example of its type to survive anywhere in the world.

Northern Ardennes, Belgium, 25th December 1944. M36 Tank Destroyers of A Company, 703rd TD Battalion are a welcome Christmas present for the Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division. They would prove invaluable as they were the only US vehicle capable of handling the Panther or Tiger tanks.

Country Life 43 by Gerald Coulson. (W)

As the sun rises over the East Anglian countryside the unmistakable sound of Merlin Engines shatter the silence as these magnificent aircraft emerge from the mist skimming across the landscape, heading back to their Norfolk base. Gerald Coulson has captured the scene perfectly, once again proving that he is a true Master in his field, combining the technical accuracy of this powerful aircraft with his ability to capture the mood and feeling of a cold winter landscape.
