HMS Benbow was completed in 1914, built by Beardmore (launched 12th November 1913). On the 10th of December she joined the Grand Fleet serving with the 4th Battle squadron. She was the flagship to Admiral Douglas Gamble until he was replaced in February 1915 by Sir Doveton Sturdee. During the Battle of Jutland. she suffered no damage. After the war she served from 1919 in the Mediterranean providing Gun fire support to the white Russians in the Black Sea until 1920. She remained in the Mediterranean until 1926 joining the Atlantic fleet for the next three years until 1929 when she was paid off and scrapped in March 1931.

The Italian destroyer Alfredo Oriani slips quietly through the open span of the swing bridge at Taranto after a long Mediterranean mission. This ship was present at the Battle of Matapan in March 1941 and was successful against Allied shipping during Operation Harpoon the following year. After the armistice, she was laid up at Malta and was eventually presented to the French navy at the end of the war as reparation, whereupon the Oriani was renamed D'Estaing and served under the French flag until 1954.

In May of that same year, Arillo attacked the British Dido Class Cruiser <i>HMS Bonaventure</i>, and Destroyers <i>HMS Hereward</i> and <i>HMS Stuart</i>, south of Crete, en route from Alexandria, the cruiser <i>Bonaventure</i> being sunk with great loss of life. A veteran of the Spanish Civil War, Lieutenant Commander Carlo Fecia Conte di Cossato was one of the most successful and formidable Italian submarine commanders of WWII. In charge of the <i>Tazzoli</i> , he destroyed almost 18,000 tons of shipping on his first mission, steadily adding to this total as they prowled the Atlantic. The <i>Tazzoli</i> is depicted as its tenacious crew retaliate with machine gun fire against a marauding Bristol Beaufort of 217 Sqn on 23rd May 1941, an encounter that left both protagonists with some damage.

One of the most experienced and respected test pilots in history, Eric 'Winkle' Brown carried out the first landing and take off by a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier on 3rd December 1945. This was accomplished in the second prototype De Havilland Vampire LZ551/G which had been extensively modified for the sole purpose of carrier operations. Not only was an arrester hook added, but the aircraft featured larger flaps and was fitted with the more powerful Goblin 2 engine. The first take off by a jet from an aircraft carrier is depicted here as Lt Cdr Brown lifts away from the deck of HMS Ocean on that momentous day.

This fine ship has enjoyed a long and varied career, perhaps its most notable role being that of flagship to the British Task Force that was sent to liberate the Falkland Islands following the Argentine invasion of 1982. She was decommissioned in 1984 and sold to the Indian Navy, whereupon she was renamed Viraat. Hermes is depicted here in stormy weather in the late 1970s before the Harrier 'ski jump' was added to her bow in readiness for the Falklands Campaign.

Two of these didn't make it to the surface and one died later in hospital, making a tragic total of 21 deaths in this extraordinary tragedy. Apart from her key role in Force H in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic, Ark Royal also took part in operations off Norway in company with HMS Glorious. It was one of her Blackburn Skuas that claimed the first aerial victory of WWII against a German aircraft on 26th September 1939 and one of her Fairey Swordfish that crippled the mighty Bismarck, leading to the German capital ship's destruction at the hands of the Royal Navy. On 13th November 1941, Ark Royal was torpedoed by U-81 off Gibraltar, her severe list causing flooding to choke her boilers, bringing her to a standstill. Her crew were taken off and the mighty <i>Ark</i> continued to list until she eventually capsized and sank.

Its dated appearance belied a solid, workmanlike airframe that provided a stable platform from which to launch torpedoes against enemy shipping, the venerable 'Stringbag' sending a greater tonnage of Axis shipping to the bottom than any other allied aircraft in the Second World War. She was unusual in that her design opted for slightly shorter masts, while the span of her yards was increased to compensate, her vast mainsail having a drop of 40ft, carried on a yard that was 80ft wide. Launched in 1868 at Aberdeen, her fate was a scandal, this wonderful ship being sold to the Portuguese government who employed her briefly as a training ship before she was callously torpedoed and sunk for target practice by the Portuguese navy in December 1907.

She is best remembered, however, for her decisive conquests against British ships during the war of 1812, among them the Guerriere against whom the Constitution gained her nickname 'Old Ironsides'. She continued to serve until 1881 and is still afloat today, the oldest seagoing warship in the world.
