Chief Master Sergeant Lloyd Deffenbaugh USAAC No Photo Available Enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1936 aged 20, he joined the cryptographic division as a codebreaker, translating messages about the positions of ships, troops and aircraft. He took part in the assault on Okinawa, on one occasion using a flame thrower against fanatical Japanese resistance, later serving in Korea and with NATO.
