Major General Walter B Sandy Thomas CB DSO MC (deceased)
Walter Babington Thomas, known as Sandy, was commissioned as a territorial Second Lieutenant prior to the beginning of World War Two. He was wounded twice in action and decorated for bravery four times. He became the youngest Commander at the age of 24 of a New Zealand Infantry battalion at war. He experienced the Battle of Britain, the fighting withdrawal from Greece and the defiant stand in Crete, the successful battle for North Africa and hard campaigning in Italy and also led a New Zealand Battalion in the Occupation Forces in Burma. Thomas transferred to the British Regular Army and fought the Mau Mau, Kenya, the communists in Malaya and the terrorists in the Yemen and with postings to the European Zone of Cold War confrontation. Rising steadily through the ranks he commanded a British Division before retiring from his military career as the last Commander of the Far East Land Forces in Singapore. He died aged 98 on 22nd October 2017.
