Lieutenant Commander Howard J Instance

Joined the Royal Navy as a Boy in 1933 and first went to sea in HMS Resolution. In June 1939 he joined HMS Royal Oak as a Leading Seaman. His Defence Station was Captain of No.1 4-in turret AA Gun, his Action Station being Captain of the right hand 15-in gun in Y turret. He was badly burned during the sinking of Royal Oak and spent a long time in hospital undergoing skin grafts. In 1940 he was posted to HMS Excellent on a gunnery course. During 1941 he served aboard HMS Witherington on Atlantic convoys and advanced to Petty Officer. In 1942 he was promoted to Warrant Officer (Gunner) and served on HMS Aberdeen on convoy duty between Freetown and the United Kingdom. He was aboard HMS Glasgow when she commissioned in 1944 and refitted for the Far East. He was commissioned in 1946, serving in the Reserve Fleet in 1949, as a Gunner at HMS Collingwood in 1951, promoted to Lieautenant on HMS Indefatigable in 1953, 1st Lieutenant of Tifner Rifle Range in Portsmouth in 1959, retired as Lieutenant Commander in 1959. In 1960 he undertook a two year training course as a schoolteacher from which profession he finally retired in 1980.
One source for this signature was signed by him in late 1989. We have no further information.
