Born 1896 son of the late Francis E Harding, Compton Way, South Petherton, Somerset. Served European War 1914-1919 with TA and Machine Gun Corps (MC); Lieutenant, Somerset Light Infantry 1920; Captain 1923; p.s.c. 1928; Brigade Major, British Force, Saar Plebiscite; Brevet Major 1935; Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1938; Lieutenant Colonel 1939; Brigadier 1942, Major General 1942; Lieutenant General 1943; Geneal 1949; Field Marshal 1953. Served in War of 1939-45 (despatches, CBE DSO and 2 bard, KCB) GOC CMF 1946-1947; GOC in C Southern Command 1947-1949, C in C Far East Land Forces 1949-1951; Commander-in-Chief, British Army of the Rhine 1951-1952, Chief of the Imperial General Staff 1952-1955; Governor and Commander in Chief Cyprus 1955- November 1957.

ADC Gen to King George VI 1950-52; to the Queen 1952-53; Colonel, 6th Gurkha Rifles 1951-1961; Colonel Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry (Somerset Light Infantry 1953 - 1960); Colonel, The Life Guards and Gold Stick to the Queen 1957-1964.
