Group Captain Peter Matthews DFC (deceased)

Joining the RAF on a short service commission on 23rd August 1937, he completed his training and was posted to No.1 Sqaudron at Tangmere on 20th August 1939, going to France with the squadron at the outbreak of war. He claimed several kills during the Battle of France and continued flying during the Battle of Britain, before being appointed Flight Commander in November 1940 and awarded the DFC in May 1941. He commanded 74 Squadron and later 145 Squadron in the Western Desertm where he was shot down on 3rd November 1942 and spent four hours in his dinghy before being rescued. He went on to command 111 Squadron in Sicily in 1943 before returning to the UK following a motor accident. He retired from the RAF on 8th May 1966 as a Wing Commander, retaining the rank of Group Captain. He died on 2nd October 1991.
